"Plan A as of today is to re-sign Jrue and operate above the cap. Get another perimeter guy with the MLE and explore some trades." - FO exec

Apparently there are tons of contingency plans if Jrue leaves and/or costs too much. They think they are a playoff team either way

I don't know their targets but I have heard some descriptions of what they are looking for. Guy like Patty Mills would be atop the wish list

Shooting is a priority but so is bball IQ and more leadership, winning past, etc. A lot of intangible things this roster does not have

This is pretty much the same plan as he'd heard before except for wanting to operate above the cap which has always been the way to go IMO. They just don't have the trade assets or Free Agent drawing power to make cap space more useful than trades and exceptions.

I think they can be with him and the right moves...and health. They should definitely make the playoffs at the least.

Without him...it obviously depends on the moves.

Patty Mills would be a homerun imo, but he has priced himself out of our range.

I would think that the only way to stay above the cap is a sign-and-trade, right? So, I wonder if Jrue is amiable to that.

Ell oh Friggin Ell

Not with this "coach" they aren't. This team with Jrue will have to win 42+ in spite of the shitty coach that should have never been hired.

They just need to tell the league that they want to operate over the cap. This would allow a team with, say, $3m in space to use the full ~$9m MLE.

You mean if Holiday walks? Thrillhouse is right, you basically don't have cap space until you renounce exceptions and use it. If Holiday walks the team is technically about $8 million under the cap including Cunningham's cap hold. Resign Cunningham and use the MLE and you're above the cap.

They would still operate above the cap if Jrue walks? That seems like we would not be able to add jackshit.

They should. The only way you don't is if Frenchy and QPon have too much negative value to be the main salary in a trade. Holiday + Cunningham walks + Asik Stretch = $15-$16 in cap space + ~$5 million Room Exception. That's pretty much enough to replace Holiday and Cunningham. Operate above the cap by trading Frenchy/QPon/Filler/Pick for Rubio/Lin/Bledsoe/Dragic and you replace Holiday, keep Cunningham with Bird Rights and still have the MLE to add 1 or 2 players.

The whole scenario relies on being able to do:

quote:

trading Frenchy/QPon/Filler/Pick for Rubio/Lin/Bledsoe/Dragic

If you can't do that..what then?

This?

quote:

Resign Cunningham and use the MLE and you're above the cap.

How is that wrong/confusing? From Larry Coon's Salary Cap FAQ on what's counted towards the Salary Cap:

quote:

A cap hold for a percentage of the previous salary of every unrenounced free agent (see question number 38).

A cap hold for the combined amount of any Mid-Level, Bi-Annual, Disabled Player (see question number 25) and trade exceptions (see question number 85) available to the team (see question number 26), if the team is under the salary cap. (Teams may renounce these exceptions, in which case they no longer are included in team salary.)

LINK

Cunningham's cap hold and the MLE and the Galloway Trade Exception are all part of what keeps the team "over" the cap even if Holiday walks.

Then you do the same trade with the cap space instead and instead of Cunningham's Bird Rights and the MLE all you have is the Room Exception. If you can't trade for a PG at all then you have to decide between something like Darren Collison + other low level player or Patty Mills and then the Room Exception.

Wihtout a Jrue S&T or a trade where we take back a good bit extra salary before Jrue's hold is removed, I don't see us operating over the cap if Jrue walks?

If Jrue walks will they try to make space to renegotiate and extend Cousins or will they just wait until next offseason?

If we're talking about subtracting Holiday and adding Patty Mills + not much else, locking Cousins up long term is probably a better use of the cap space than hoping modest replacements and no real additions will get you to the playoffs and Cousins re-signing next offseason.

It scares me that this team seems to think something less than a max even has a chance to keep Jrue. He's the best PG not named Chris Paul on the market. He's going to get max offers.

Now maybe it's all lip service. But you might as well start talking to Mills' agent behind the scenes if you aren't going to max Jrue.

This team needs to start talking to Jrue' s wife and courting her to either re-sign or S&T.

After all, the franchise did them both a solid when her health was at issue.

Women are more emotional than men and we may be able to get her on board for one of the two scenarios than Jrue's agent.

After all, happy wife = happy life.

Just thinking of this from the legacy of Demps perspective, it is crazy he will still have a job.

His entire strategy, his entire portfolio is in near total collapse: Eric Gordon, Ryan Anderson, Jrue Holiday, Tyreke Evans, Austin Rivers, Al Farouq Aminu. All basically gone. Stuck with only the worst of the worst choices in Asik and Frenchy.

With zero playoff wins to show for it.

Probably the greatest contribution he has had for the league is to show how not to re-build a team.

The only team that can offer a full $30 million max without changing their roster is Philly. Philly may have 2 top 5 picks in a PG rich draft.

Brooklyn will start with about $27 million in cap space but they are rumored to be interested in throwing money at KCP and bringing in top Euroleague PG Milos Teodosic. LINK /

Denver and New York will start with almost $24 and $23 million in cap space respectively. Dallas is a dark horse that could get into the low $20s also if Dirk takes a huge pay cut or they dump Wesley Matthews.

So the teams with the most money to spend don't have the most need for Holiday, and the teams with the most need would have to blow the entirety of their cap space on him and possibly shed a player or 2 to make sure they went high enough that we don't match. It only takes one a-hole, but if Indy is getting ready to blow it up, I go after Teague before I try to outbid the Pels on Holiday.
