Yep they are sending out RFPs to 11 cities in the region, 7 of which are in Louisiana. Hope Lafayette gets it personally

The franchise is sending a Request for Proposal (RFP) to 11 different cities and/or communities across Louisiana (seven), Mississippi (two), Alabama (one) and Florida (one). The cities were selected based on our team and NBA research. The team will be owned and operated by New Orleans Pelicans Owner Tom Benson and will be a direct, one-to-one affiliate of the Pelicans.

I think Biloxi or Mobile actually make a lot more sense. But I can see Laffy.

I don't know if it will remain the case with the NBA putting more emphasis on the DLeague and planning to have more "top" players, but most DLeague teams have lost money. I'm guessing they go with the city that gives them the best arena deal and most tax breaks.

Watch them put it somewhere way too close to the city like Hammond or Covington.

Guessing the cities are:

Shreveport
Bossier City
Baton Rouge
Lafayette
Lake Charles
Monroe
Alexandria
Biloxi
Gulfport
Mobile
Pensacola

I think it needs to be Bossier City. They have the arena already set up and we need North La to pay attention to the Pels and not the Mavs

A partnership with MGM for a 4000 seat arena in Biloxi would make a lot of sense.

Any new arena could be built like the odd one in Santa Cruz.

Here's a current franchise map. No matter where they put it, those are going to be long bus rides.

There's no place to build an arena in Covington.

I'd love it personally because I live in Covington and would go to damn near every game, but there's no way that's happening.

Lafayette, Hammond, LC, even Shreveport, Bossier or Monroe make more sense.

Eta: I also see the Mississippi and Alabama cities as good options for generating fam interest in the Pels.

I personally wouldn't go to games in MS or AL just because those states have mandates for police to pull over every Louisian driver and ticket them for any bullshite offense, knowing that paying the fine is more convenient than spending a day in court fighting it.

You'd be shocked to learn how much of their government revenue comes from fabricated traffic offenses from residents of other states.

MS is much worse than AL, but you have to go through MS to get to AL.

That said, Saint Tammany Parish president Pat Brister is corrupt AF, and if she has some ownership in whatever company builds the arena I could see her doing anything she could (tax incentives, etc.) to get the team in Saint Tammany.

Why would anyone build an arena for a DLeague team? Most of the players make less than $30k per year and they travel to games by bus. This is not a big money league that's going to spur economic activity. It's a nice perk for a town that will help them fill the schedule of a pre-existing arena.

Baton Rouge should probably be last on the list. You have to compete with LSU sports and it's close enough to NOLA that you might not spur that much more demand for the Pels. If they do go to Baton Rouge though, they should be called the Baton Rougarous.

The poster I was replying to suggested Covington. Covington doesn't have a suitable arena so they'd have to build one. The Parish President is corrupt enough that if she could personally profit from the construction of an arena, I could totally see her doing it, regardless if it costs the city and parish tens of millions.

She'd figure out a way to raise taxes, probably using the secret special elections they usually hold and don't publicize in hopes that the only people who show up to vote are parish employees who she can count on to vote "yes."

And of course, the tax increase amendment would be written in such a way that even a lawyer would need a translater to make sense of it.

All that said, fan support in Covington is already strong. I attend 6-10 games at the Blender each year, and many of my friends also attend regularly.

If the city is chosen based on generating fan interest in a region where it is lacking, Covington makes no sense at all.
