Omer is No 1 on our list.
Will it be trade or stretch.
To trade him we will have to include picks.
To buy him out and stretch - we will need Benson's acceptance.
What are the options
1. Buyout and stretching full guaranteed amount ~25 millions/for 7 years (you have to do it before august 31st)
2. Buyout and stretching discounted amount - agreed with him. So to free himself he agrees for an amount (f.e. 20 millions) - and only this amount counts against cap.
After waiving him he has a right to sign elswhere.
By signing contract elsewhere (NBA or abroad) he may give a little breathe to our salary. It is called set-off.
Per Lary Coon:
If this player signs a $2 million contract with another team for the 2017-18 season, his original team gets to set off $2 million minus $1,312,611 (the minimum salary for a one-year veteran in 2017-18), divided by two, or $343,694.
So no matter where he will sign he may give us some breathe.
If a stretching will be for 7 years, this set-off will be available only for 3 years (in accordance to his deal with NO).
So in best case, he may give us a discount (let's say 5 millions) to free himself from Pels - and he might agree for a deal (like Jamal Crawford) with other team, and gives us little extra.
His agent is talking everywhere - he is checking how much money can he earn elsewhere, to leave him some options.

I don't understand why he can't just retire due to injury. He would still get all his money, but he wouldn't count towards the cap. He has a bad back, is a shell of the player that he was before and playing causes him pain. If the team and him can show that, the team would get the waiver and he go about his merry way with a nice golden parachute.
I think Darius Miles is the one that ruined that type of arrangement. He didn't play for like 3 seasons and the team tried to retire him. He decided to prove them wrong and played injured for another team..

If he retires, does he not count against the cap? Is that right?

He would have not to play for 2 (?) years and be unable to play from medical standpoint. And only after retirement will come from books.
So forget about it

Bad back.
Shell of his dreams.
Still wants to be on a team. Not go back to old country as washed up old back. He is still hoping father time did not already call in marker. Pals, dad & wife blowing smoke up his a$$. Need a shrink first, then retire aug 1.

I'm not sure if he would be wise to go back to his old country from a political standpoint.

Because he probably thinks that he can still play.

I was thinking about this the other day
Does anyone know whether there's an issue here or not?
I haven't seen anything to that effect and he did play on the Turkish natl team the last time he was healthy

He is not in opposition to their president as f.e. Kanter.
Heck, it is hard to say if he is engaged or interested in politics.
He is just a shy person. It is hard to find even an interview with him.
It is hard to say what he wants in life. Money, fame, freedom? Who knows?
But also it is not like in Turkey there is a civil war...

I really enjoyed this pawel impersonation.

From what I've found, he can retire now (medically). The team can put him on the disabled/retired list. Then on the one anniversary from the last game he played (sometime this past February ), they can apply for the waiver. So he would still get his money, but he would be off the books for the next season going forward.
All this would take Asik agreeing to not attempt a comeback or playing competitive ball again. Which shouldn't be that hard of a sell, with him still set to receive 20M+ in the future..

He's always looks a little thin, but the last time we saw him, he looked emaciated. He may be thinner now than 2 years ago, but he's looking much better than in March or April.

Why the hell would he do that? He gets $25M regardless. No chance he agrees to retire and never play again for no reason.

i don't understand why this guy can't start eating some meals and stop sucking at life so bad.

He would agree because he can start a life after basketball. I don't know if you get this, but playing a professional sport is incredibly physically demanding. His injuries and limitations are only going to increase as he places additional wear and tear on his body. This is all too common in extrodinarily large people like him. Unless he has an extreme love for the game and competing, I don't see why he wouldn't agree.
To turn your question back on you, you get paid for the next 3 years whether you go to work or not. Are you going to go?

Option 3: stop taking the AZT drug. Collect on insurance policy.
