This reminds me of the saints draft a while ago. Everyone wanted us to trade down and add more picks...That didn't happen.

Yeah, I just think there is more value after 10. There are no stars in the draft and the later guys are just as good or have as much potential. If Burke or someone big drops (besides Porter), I'd love to trade back with Utah, OKC or someone like that and add extra picks. Also, I love the trade rumor with Dallas (getting the pick and taking Marion). I'm getting really excited for this draft..

That is not a rumor. I'm sure Dallas will trade #13 to anyone willing to take on Marion without sending anything back. But that's a pretty bad trade from Demps and Monty's view because you'd essentially be giving up on FA this season.

Yup. No chance I'm taking on Marion for the 13th pick in this draft.

As well I think they should. I just don't see any difference makers for this team this season (in FA). Marion would actually help this team. He would fill a big hole, is a good defender, has playoff experience, plus he'd be playing for a new contract or he'd be great trade bait near the deadline. Honestly, what SF can we get that would be better than him?

One thing remains consistent. I couldn't be further away from your opinions than any other poster on here.

Taking on Marion and essentially throwing in the towel on FA for the 13th pick in a terrible draft is downright insane.

I've said before I'm ok renting cap space for more assets if you don't have a cornerstone target in FA, but that's just me. Benson wants to see results before he dies and you don't have time to prolong the rebuild any longer.

At least you didn't call me an idiot this time, so I can live with that.

I guess it depends on how big of a splash do you think they can make. I think they will have around 14-15 to spend. Marion and the draft pick would be around 11 or so. So they should have around 4 or so left, plus an exception to pick up someone else, if they need to. If they draft a SG and SF (6 and 13), they could use a year to grow behind Gordon and Marion (while Davis and Rivers get more polish). We'd go into next offseason with trade bait in Gordon and nice cap space from Marion. It'd be a nice year of growth..

I don't expect a splash in FA. But I'd rather have 3-4 guys that can contribute than an old player in Marion taking up a huge amount of space and then signing a bunch of league minimums.

Marion has no future with the team. AND, you're helping a division team get Dwight. Nah.

In addition, you're getting rid of any cap flexibility in case a really good deal comes along for essentially gaining a late lottery pick in a crappy draft. A spot around where Xavier Henry was picked.

I don't think we have that many spots up for grabs, especially among guys we can give playing time. We have Vasquez, Rivers, Gordon, Anderson, Smith, Davis and Lopez guaranteed spots. If you add the draft pick (6), Marion and another pick (13), that makes 10 guys. If you count Miller, Roberts or Admunson that gets you to 13. They can get rid of some guys or trade around. But SF is a big need and I'd rather solve it outright, even for just a season.

Don't think have to reach a salary floor? You just can't stay way under the cap, right? So they have to do something or pick up somebody..

I can cherry pick guys in the teens all day and name good to great players. Kwahi Leonard was around 15 and I'd kill for that type of player. It's a gamble, but not a lot of downside in my book..

Ditto. And I actually think Marion would help this team win some games next season. The issue is that we'd have to give up on FA before it even begins, or we'd have to like the guy that Dallas happened to have drafted. If we strike out early in FA and Dallas still feels they have a shot at Howard, I guess we could do Marion and their 2014 for cap space and cross our fingers that they miss out on him.

Have we discussed the fact that, last year, the team was completely unwilling to do individual workouts, but this year they are doing one with Burke?

Seems like an odd shift in philosophy.
Chad Ford has an article out today talking about Burke, Mclemore and Porter not doing any group workouts.

Maybe Monty and Dell had to break their own rules if they wanted to see Burke in person badly enough

Anthony Davis didn't do any group workouts. Bonafide top 10 prospects rarely ever do group workouts. I don't think anyone in the top 7 did any groups last year.

Well of course AD didn't. He was a lock number one pick.
Burke is significant because he was working out for Phoenix while they where having a HUGE group workout and he didnt participate.

MCW, Mccollum and Larkin were working out against each other. Oladipo and Shabazz were there working out against each other. I think Zeller and Olynyk were there too. Len was there but obviously didnt work.

Phoenix basically had the whole lottery there

Lillard did the same thing last year. It's not uncommon for bonafide top 10 picks to do that.

Last year when we worked out guys like Ross, Lamb, Rivers, Jones, and etc.. None of them were bonafide top 10 picks.

Not completely insane if you get some cash and maybe a young player or future pick thrown in. The FA crop is terrible this year. Why use the cap in long term deals for marginal players? If you made this trade and got cash, odds are you would buy out Marion for something less than his contract (say $5-$6 million) and still have some cap room for FA (and get a pick and young player). Not out of the question.

I tend to agree.

Weak FA might mean a Marion rental is worth it for an extra pick. If they get a sf and a backcourt prospect with the picks, i like the depth on the team this season and beyond. Plus they might be able to flip Marion at the deadline, if they are so inclined

Not really worried about Dwight. I dont think he leaves LA as an UFA. My only concern is would Marion report to NO?

I want to agree with you FB, but the more I think about it, the more I'm ok with taking on Marion's contract for one year.

If we could draft Schroeder/McCullom and Len, that gives us plenty of room to go after a SF next year or draft one. A little more flexability going forward than if we just sign a FA this year.

It's not a great idea, but it's not a terrible one either.
