Knock it off guys. I spent too much time hitting play/rewind and typing out that interview to have this turn into your typical Monty bashing back and forth. This is pretty substantive stuff for the offseason.

No it doesn't.

SK: ...Is this as good as it's been as far as maybe the way you feel in the off season.

Monty: Yeah, I think so. Mostly because we have some guys that have been with us for a couple of years. Tyreke's gonna have another camp, he's been with us for a year. Ryan is going on his 3rd year, even though he had a setback last year, he knows what we expect. But more importantly Anthony Davis is a guy that he continues to improve. This will be his 3rd year, we all know that he's the guy and yet he has some guys that are right behind him as far as experience and how they are viewed in the NBA. Couple that with Russ and we've got some X factor guys that could have a huge impact on our team in Jimmer and John Salmons. I just feel like this is a really good time for the organization, and you know, like all of our fans, we've been through a lot. And it's good to have this feeling going into the season. I just feel like we have the pieces and the people to have a vast improvement this season.

This ties right into the corporate knowledge thread.

What's faster pace than a Tyreke one man fast break off a rebound or steal? Not to mention thanks to Holiday's injury, the last 2 years have seen Greivis "needs 3 picks to get into the lane" Vasquez and Brian "Let me dribble the ball until me shooting is the only available option" Roberts have spent most of the minutes running the point. I really don't think slowing down is what we're going to see.

They may want to go fast; I'm not saying this isn't the goal.

But "it starts with defense"

=/=

"we want to play at a fast pace"

How does Asik on the floor dictate pace? Seems to me that he fits into the slower pace motto Monty likes to run.

Houston had no problems running when he was their starter. He can't run, but he's good at setting up fast breaks off of rebounds.

Asik should create missed shots, which should create fast breaks.

Monty: It's something that ummm, do we have a prototype small forward? No, but I have to be able to make some adjustments at that position. I'm not gonna reveal what I'm going to do just yet, but I do feel like we have the people around on our team that can allow me to maybe play a bit differently than other teams, but because of the defensive moves that we've made, especially getting Jrue back, it might not be your prototype line up that you see out there from time to time but it's going to be an effective lineup just because of who we have on our front line and the experience that we have and our pace of play is something that we feel like has gotten better over the last couple of years and I think we're going to be even better this year. It always starts on the defensive end. We don't have a prototype Small Forward, but nobody has a perfect team. You have to make the most of what you have and we have some really good guys and that's something that I'm looking forward to.

I read that as we gotta get our best guys on the floor, and we're going small. This is the most hopeful quote I've ever seen come out of this guys mouth. Still, believe it when I see it.

I was surprised at just how good he is. He finds his guards really fast once he gets the rebound. LINK

We should all be excited. He's a great player. Maybe a little bit under the radar nationally.

Yep, that was one of the first things i noticed about him. He immediately looks to push the ball up the court after a rebound.

Is it that same arrogance that got him hand picked to be an assistant for Team USA??...... I'm sure you know much better what it takes.

Key word there is ASSISTANT. No one thinks Monty can't coach basketball at all. Quite the opposite, I think most realize he has a good coaching pedigree, but he's simply not made to be a head coach IMO. He's an assistant coach that is very good when focusing only on a single area of the game. As an overall coach, he's simply bad.

Much like in the NFL. Some guys are great, and I mean GREAT, OCs/DCs, but then flop as a HC. It doesn't make them bad coaches, but being a good assistant coach does not equal a good HC.

Plus, we were around the top 10 in pace last year before the injuries really started.

Then there's the fact that there's seems to be almost no correlation between pace and winning games.

The top 5 teams in pace last year: Philly, LAL, Denver, Minny, Hous

The bottom 5 teams in pace last year: Memphis, NYK, Chicago, Miami, Utah

Special = 3 guard lineups

That's a good point.

As you've stated before, Monty would rather lose with defense than win with offense. Hopefully Asik is the security blanket that frees him to take more chances with more offensive minded lineups.

Actually it does because you don't "get out and run" off a made basket where the D can set up.

You are going backwards. You are assuming we want to run fast. Yes, if the goal is to run fast, then you need to start it with D.

But just because he said "it stars with defense," doesn't mean "we want to run fast."

"It starts with defense," means we are going to build our team based on tough defense. The old Pistons teams "started with defense" and they were super slow.
