re: Let's Rank Teams Definitively Better Than Us

A major factor that we will improve in from last season to this one is defensive quickness, the biggest improvement imo. We can now guard the perimeter and all the quick guards like parker and curry.

A small upgrade at pg? I am a fan of Vasquez but Jrue is a little better than a small upgrade...

I don't know that GS is clearly better than us, and they're trying to dump salary. If they get rid of Lee (who killed us last year, though AD had his way with him on offense) and don't land a big FA afterwards, I could see them falling out of the playoffs.

It really depends on Dwight. Their roster can go anywhere from last year's team without Landry, which is worse, to swapping Bogut for Dwight, which is better.

West:

Spurs
OKC
Grizzlies
Clippers
Warriors
Lakers
Rockets

East:

Miami
Knicks
Bulls
Pacers
Nets

That sticks us around 13ish overall, 8th in the West, which is probably around where we will finish IMO

I'd like to think these moves put the pelicans in contention for the 7 or 8

But I am a pessimist. It's just on paper now. Let me see how they gel play as a group Monty's handling of rotations etc

But I can't disagree that fans should be excited over what has been done. On paper this is a much better team with more moves possible

the hornets had the lowest Pace of any team last season in the NBA. they had the 3rd worst defensive efficiency. and they were middle of the pack in points given up.

i wonder if monty is going to try to continue to keep the pace down and improve defense this season or if he will allow more running with the athleticism he now has at his disposal.

If he doesn't do this with the backcourt/wing athletes he has now, it will be a mistake IMO.

playing faster is a goliath strategy. he's got more talent, so why not maximize the chances the talent has to impact the game?

I have no doubt they'll try to push the pace

Steals and rebounds lead to transition, especially when you have Holiday running the break instead of Vasquez. Pace will increase significantly just on that improvement alone.

I would maybe swap Houston for Portland. If the Blazers could find a way to play together, they're VERY talented.

defensive efficiency is heavily reliant upon pace...do you think the PPG allowed goes up or down, and where does the defensive efficiency go? i think they allow around the same PPG, but the efficiency improves

I think the only for sure teams in the west that are better are San Antonio, Memphis, LAC & OKC

all the other are mid 40 win teams. That's right where i see us.

I think GSW and DEN will remain the same. DEN will prob be worse.

If houston lands Howard, we'll see where they stand if they have to give something up.

Agreed. Remember that Withey was 2nd only to AD in blocks and he also doesn't foul much either. The Block Party did not die on draft night. Add a passable defensive center and defensive wing in FA and it's hard to not see this team improving immensely on defense in a way that increases pace.
