So I was listening Zach Lowe's podcast and Jeff was featured on it. He asked JVG if he would want to take the head coaching job for the pels. He said that he would never promote himself for a job right after a friend of his is fired from it. He went on to say that he wouldn't ever publicly promote himself for a HC job and thinks he should be done privately. To me it sounds like he would be interested/wants to take the job but it's in bad taste to say he wants the job publicly hours after the coach was just fired.

that's interesting. I think most people assume he's basketball's Jon Gruden.

Do you have a link?

I really want Thibs but his ability to destroy players bodies scares the crap out me with our fragile roster. I like Gentry but he's old and I want a young coach. Then we have rookie coaches who are unknowns and may turn out to be worst than Monty but we wouldn't know till 3 years down the line and we get to hear the same excuses Monty has been telling for 5 years. JVG has always been a great coach and has still been constantly in touch with the leauge to see how the game has changed. So I won't be worried if he will be stuck in the past. Also by his broadcasting he seems to know what he talking about and has coach all time greats.

You see it all the time in sports. Teams ALWAYS go from the young, energetic coach, to the experienced, disciplinarian coach, back to the young, energetic coach, so on and so forth.

So I don't see the Pels taking a chance on another young gun, like Monty was.

Are you suggesting that Thibs has the magical ability to somehow weaken the tissues in his player's bodies so that they sustain injuries?

If Thibs has a body weakening power, then I'm sure Monty has the same thing with our recent injury history at least we'd be replacing him with a better coach outside of that super power

Do you not get it? He's saying he is a pretty successful coach who has an interest in coaching us. Are you fricking retarded or something?

Everyone out there who is looking for a coaching job in the NBA is going to want this job, they know what it means to have Anthony Davis. Hell, 3/4 of the current coaches in the league would probably leave for this job if they were allowed.

I don't know what I think about Van Gundy. He's a regular on Lowe's podcasts and I like his general philosophy, but when he's called Pelicans games he did not seem to think much of our roster. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but needing to turn over a roster quickly is expensive, a cost we probably can't afford right now after Demps has already traded future assets to accelerate the rebuild. So while I don't question JVG's qualifications for the job, I do question if he's a good fit depending on how much roster change he wants.

Very good point. Based on his comments, I would say that you are probably correct in his evaluation of our roster.

I like JVG a lot as a '90s-'00s basketball coach and probably the best NBA color guy working today, but his coaching style would be a horrible fit for our roster and a horrible fit in general for any modern team besides maybe the Grizzlies, Pacers, or Rockets.

If we thought Monty stifled our quirky, athletic roster that we think should be running around, we would absolutely detest what Van Gundy would do with our personnel. It's just a bad fit.
