Is it possible to fix this team?
Posted by SlowFlowPro on 6/22/17 at 4:00 pm00
i mean even to be a consistent 4-5 seed in the West
Jrue looks to be gone and we won't get any value for him (just like we got nothing for Gordon or Anderson)
we'll possibly have cap room but can we spend it? just look at how terrible last offseason was
we're stuck with the terrible Hill contract for a bit (esp if we dump Asik's contract)
we have a strangely constructed team that's about to lose its 3rd best player and have almost no real ability to improve the structure of the mismash of talent
is there even a light at the end of the tunnel? it seems that we're destined to blow it up in a year and deal AD/Cousins, gut our front office, and hire Hinkie and start up the process (where we have to wait another 5-6 years to see any improvement)

We have two top 15 players.
While things can get complicated, the answer is yes, it can be fixed, in a variety of ways.
The real question is WILL it get fixed?
I think the answer is no because of Dell Demps/Mickey Loomis.

The roster is a shitshow, but its not nearly as bad as you think.
QPon and Ajinca can likely be moved. Asik can be stretched.
While the Hill contract isn't great to say the least, he can play basketball, especially on the defensive end. His real plus minus was pretty good (at least for us) if I remember correctly.
You could, for instance, use the 2018 pick to acquire, let's say Ricky Rubio, use the MLE and BAE on useful players...
And have serious flexibility next year to make a splash.

He explained that the biggest error a GM can make is signing or trading for a player and then letting the player walk without getting any assets in return. He called it a "double whammy" as you no longer have the assets you gave up to get the player AND you did not turn the player into assets you can use in the future. He said that gets GM's fired (anywhere except the Pelicans I guess).

If they can dump Ajinca and Qpon, and stretch Asik they have close to max cap space, while still holding on to their 2018 first round pick. They could definitely make moves at that point.
Will they do that? Who knows...

How do you dump Qpon, Ajinca, and Asik while keeping the MLE and BAE?
You could do what you said, and have roughly 14 mil in cap space to add extra players (not by using the MLE and BAE though).

You would probably have to add second round picks to them or something. Definitely not firsts.

Teams don't have an answer for the 5/4 Pick and Roll. I do think they'll need to hit on some guys that can contribute in FA, but all you need those guys to do is defend, move without the ball and knock down shots.
If Jrue walks use the cap space on something like Patty Mills and CJ Miles and all of a sudden AD/DC has 2 41% 3 point shooters starting next to them. If Hill can continue to improve his shot great, if not maybe you start Moore at SG and slide Miles to SF.

If you take on players on 1 year deals or not fully guaranteed. Pipedream but possible.

as i said in another thread (that made me make this one), our asset management has been insanely bad

not trying to be a negative nancy
but a starting 5 of AD/Cousins/Miles/Hill/Mills seems like a borderline playoff team every third year

This is true. Dell has a severe problem with sunk cost and not flipping for assets. I wish he had a lot more Morey in him.
But, regardless, you're never dead when you have two superstar level players. We just have to shift around contracts until we find the right combo.

I think any team with AD and Cousins for a full(ish) season will be a playoff contending team in pretty much any year.
Once they got rolling they played great together. I don't think making the playoffs is really going to be a problem if they are healthy.
Its getting to be better than a 7/8 seed.

If Jrue walks, ship out Ajinca and Qpon, stretch Asik, trade a protected 1st for Beverly and sign Gallinari with the rest of your cap space.
Cousins
Davis
Gallinari
Moore
Beverly
Hill backing up both forward positions.
I don't know, just throwing ideas out there that would fit financially.
ETA: Or, do the same concept and throw out a protected first for Will Barton, and sign George Hill with the remaining cap space.

That's just step 1. I'm guessing they'll trade future picks for a starting caliber guard/wing in season. To me the important thing is can Cousins handle the load being the offensive hub. Jokic had a ridiculous Ast:TO ratio like 6:1, Cousins career Ast:TO ratio is 3:3.5.

People rag on Gordon and Anderson but at least they're NBA level players.
WTF was Dell thinking after seeing Asik for a full season and giving him that money? This is one of the rare examples where a message board really does know more than the GM.
Pretty much no one wanted to pay Asik that much.
Hill? WTFF? Dude was garbage with Indiana and had a few decent playoff games. "Oh, that the new reality of the NBA cap." People said.
F that. I said it last year and I'll say it again. I don't give a F what the cap is. You can't pay a career 5 ppg scorer that much money. It's retarded.

Which is why I don't like the Hill contract. Let someone else grossly overpay for 4 ppg scorers.
