Important Questions for the Post Monty Era
Posted by TigerinATL on 5/13/15 at 8:20 am00
1) Who is in charge? Obviously Loomis is, but does Demps have one foot in the grave as he continues build the roster and conduct the coaching search? I always thought Monty and Demps were a package deal for 1 reason, if you didn't fire them together you are either committing to Demps for another 3-4 years or setting yourself up for the same situation of the coach and GM not being in sync if he gets fired/not re-signed. Oleh over at The Bird Rights speculates that Dumars is the man behind the curtain, LINK but if that's true why not just come out with it? Demps is under contract so it's not like he'd quit if he got a new supervisor.
2) What is the timeline and end goal/target? Is whoever's in charge focused on tweaking what we currently have and trying to build a contender with 1 SuperStar surrounded by good player, or do they have their eyes set on stealing another star in a few years like Cousins or Wall?
3) What kind of coach do we need, Offensive or Defensive? Thibs seems to fit the current roster fairly well with only a few tweaks needed, but if your end goal is teaming up AD and Cousins, is Thibs the guy for that? Maybe he is, I honestly haven't thought about it too much, but if you're committing to a coach for the next 2-4 years it seems like he needs to be compatible with your 2-4 year goals from question #2.
Also regarding offense vs. defense, which do we need with the current roster? The defense seems to stand out, and there were certainly times we couldn't buy a stop to save our lives, but there were more times and more blame put on the periods where we couldn't make a bucket to save our lives. Monty also regularly and rightly I think pointed out how when the team played selfish ISO ball on offense and couldn't score, it didn't allow the team to set up on defense and get stops. So in a way better flow to the offense could improve the defense.

+ Thibs
- Tyreke
Less selfish ISO ball and better defense. I just don't see how Tyreke would survive under Thibs. We'd almost need to trade him now before he finds the bench and ends up with no value like Carlos Boozer

Is he? He wouldn't comment on his contract situation yesterday.
+1 to losing Tyreke and gaining Thibs
This team should be good defensively, it's good enough on offense with the three point shooting of Gordon, Qpon, and Anderson, and the all around game of AD and Jrue.

If making the playoffs didn't trigger a 1 year extension as has been speculated, the team at least has an option for this year and the basic point was the team is the one in control. Denying Dumars involvement, firing Monty, making Demps do that presser, then firing Demps to bring in Dumars would look bad, like Eric Gordon of 3 years ago was running the PR for you bad.

It was just an awkward situation when he was asked about it yesterday. If he had the team option activated I figured he would have just said that. Really strange how Loomis was the one to do the firing. Monty didn't even mention Dell in his interview after.

Pretty sure TBW quoted Loomis as saying Demps has 2 more years and that Demps is running the search.

That article from Oleh is off the wall. He means well, but it was more than a little delirious. He was parsing Demps's feelings based on how he read a prepared statement.
More on the entire staff than one guy. They need a guy willing to work with top notch assistants and they need to go get those assistants.
