We don't know how far Benson's willing to go though. If he says no tax at all, and so far all small markets including the Spurs seem to avoid the tax, then having Oden a 2nd year could seriously hinder moves.

Yeah it does.

It would be asinine to give a guaranteed 2 years to this dude. 2nd year needs to be a TO.

If Demps and Williams believe this guy can ball and offer him 2 years. 2nd year non guaranteed. I would not be upset at all. It's like getting a rookie and hoping he pans out in my opinion. I know this guys get injured a lot but if somehow they believe he can come back and make an impact for just 3 mil a year. Oden seems like he wants to show what he is made up and why he was the reason he was drafted before KD. I doubt this guy will slack off with the chip otf his shoulder. if he does not pan out, we can find an undrafted rookie I guess. It seems like a huge plus for any team (even it it's not the pelicans)

If Oden gets 2 years, chances are that the team inserts the same injury clause from Minny's Brandon Roy contract into the deal.

That means they can void the second year if Oden misses X amount of time due to identified previous injuries, meaning his microfractured knees. Given that Oden hasn't played since 2010, that language damn well better be in there.

No it doesn't. It's been discussed on this board today. We can easily maneuver our roster to avoid the luxury tax and still use our MLE again next year.

It will be, this is Demps, not The Walrus.

If the Pelicans are taking the risk on Oden it seems they would want to structure things to give them long term options for Oden. IDK what they are thinking though. Like if they gave him two years, but then had a TO the third year. That would mean they commit two years. Then if he ends up turning it around they get him for another possibly cheap year and the ability to go over the cap to keep him when he becomes a FA again.

In that scenario he would be a FA at 28 years old.

If he thinks he is ready to play, why would he take that? I don't disagree from a team perspective it would be great... just not sure why he would like that?

Had surgery 1 1/2 years ago, still isn't cleared to play 5 on 5.

Oden gets $4-6 million and a two year chance with a team that could compliment his development.

In return he gives the Pelicans a third year team option. Unless Oden becomes a stud then he wouldn't make way more anyways. I also thought he wasn't super concerned about money.

Exactly. I believe the scout's comment was "I wish him the best of luck"

That's not exactly a ringing endorsement for his ability to play in the NBA. Even if he has superhuman drive like Chad Jones, sometimes the body just isn't capable of doing the things it used to post injury. I have no idea how he's even able to walk after those horrific injuries, much less run or take a beating.

That's what I'm hoping for. There's no reason for him to sign a 2 year deal with the second being a team option. If he gets hurt, then the team won't pick him up. If he stays healthy, then he'd make more as a FA than the ~$3m he'd be getting when the team picks up his option. He'd definitely be better off signing a one year deal, and I'm sure there are teams offering that. Now having that second year guaranteed, that should be enough sweetener to get him to accept a team option in the third year. He'd be getting the security of the extra guaranteed salary, and the team would be gaining potentially a bargain in the third year + getting his Bird rights moving forward.

good stuff...ya, we will have to give the second year if we want to get Oden. All things equal, he's not choosing the Pels.

He just met with 3 teams at once. This last one is just with us. Nice try at being a smart arse though.
