Ettore Messina as a possibility?
Posted by Fun Bunch on 5/12/15 at 5:12 pm33
Thoughts?
He's an absolute legend in Europe. Came over here to be an assistant under Pop, most people feel that was a move to get an NBA HC job.
He's a ball movement guy. It is intriguing to me.

Dellroy has the ties to Europe. He'll give him a good look Im sure
to be fair to blatt he got hired before The Decision 2: Electric Boogaloo
everything changed in an instant when lebron came back
he had to ditch his system to accommodate different players and different expectations
I don't think you use that as a measuring stick in evaluating messina

Which means that if the Cavs want to ditich Blatt, I'd be happy with him being the Pels HC.

Ettore Messina is more than just a international coach with a long resume that was mostly filled out across the Atlantic Ocean. He is recognized to be as one of the most brilliant basketball minds in the game today, and that's including within the NBA. His ties to our league go well beyond just his several assistant coaching stints. He has demonstrated an incredible amount of knowledge as evidenced through his personal writings from a number of blog entries. He understands how the NBA differs from the European brand of basketball.
And now, he has just spent a full season learning the game from the best coach and system in the game today. On paper, can you envision a more perfect candidate for Dell Demps? Someone who lives and breathes the Spurs Way with every breath?

Messina is viewed much more highly than Blatt in Europe.

Blatt was riding the high off of an upset European title. Messina won everything there was to win over a decade of coaching in Europe. Plus he came to the NBA to learn the game and spent a year as Pop's lead assistant. He even coached a couple of games when Pop didn't feel like it.
He's a great candidate that I would be really happy to have.

Blatt made the jump directly from the Israel league. Which probably isn't th most competitive outside the US.
Messina has been an assistant with Spurs for a year at least. So He isn't as unexperienced as an NBA guy.

That certainly is a great question. When we talk about the "players", I think we'll all agree that AD is the biggest concern and my guess is he would accept and respect him.
The NBA is evolving more and more into a Eupropean style game; the bigs aren't the superstars of the league because they don't want to play with their backs to the basket. Today, the bigs want to face the basket and take the 15 footer...less of a beating than playing around the rim. AD is one of those types of players, as are most of the young 4/5 hybrids.
Secondly, AD has proven he can excel playing European style ball; in fact, he has expressed that he rather enjoys it.
Messina really doesn't have a shot at the HC position with the Pels. My guess is that the job is JVG's, if he wants it. If JVG doesn't take the job, Messina would be a very high risk/high reward coach and they could do worse.
