A potential top 5 pick that helps push better fits down to the Pelicans.

quote:

UNLV draft prospect Anthony Bennett will have rotator cuff surgery on his left shoulder Wednesday, agent Jeff Schwartz told ESPN.com.

Bennett will miss all NBA pre-draft workouts, the NBA draft combine and summer league, Schwartz said. The surgery could keep Bennett out of commission up to four months.

Bennett is currently ranked No. 4 on ESPN.com's Big Board and is projected as a Top 10 pick in the upcoming draft.

ESPN.com spoke to two NBA GMs who said they think the surgery is unlikely to affect his draft position.

"You always would prefer a guy is healthy, works out for you and can play in summer league," one GM said. "However, I don't think in this case that it will really matter. We got a good feel for his game. He's one of the most NBA-ready prospects in the draft. I wouldn't blink taking him in the Top 5 as long as the surgery is successful."

I know no one is talking about him as a fit for the Hornets. But I have a feeling he is a dark horse candidate that Dell and Monty likes.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him in the navy, red and gray

Would he get many minutes though? From what I've heard he won't be good at guarding SFs which puts him in the same boat as Anderson, fighting Davis for minutes at PF. Normally I think you go BPA, but not if you don't have minutes and a potential asset loses value on the bench like Derrick Williams in Minnesota.

I think he is very capable of guarding nba sfs. His athleticism is ridiculous. Just needs to work on it. Young kid. 7'1" wingspan. Him anderson and davis on the floor together would be deadlyimo. He can help out with rebounding a lot. He can come in and immediately start slashing to the inside effectively.

I'm not sure about minutes. Depends how the roster shakes out and which way the FO goes.

I do think there would be ways to get him on the floor as a 3 with AD at the 4 and someone else at the 5.

Or someone at the 3, Bennett at the 4 and AD at the 5.

I also think PFs and SFs are becoming more and more interchangeable. There are a few traditional PFs left but the others are tweeners. shite, even LBJ played predominantly PF this year

Al-Farouq Aminu esque ... No thanks. Gotta have floor spacing @ the 3 with this team.

frick. I don't care what those GMs say, this could drop him into the 6-8 range. Not what we needed at all.

I think this guy is a PF/SF tweener and not what we need at all.

Bennett shot well from mid range this past season. I worry abouy his outside shooting translating over but mid range I am certain will be better than josh smith. I'd rather have josh smith as a trade chip than ty lawson (trey Burke) if that's who you're comparing Bennett to. AD will grow another inch or 2, I think that's a bad comparison to make with horford. Players like Bennett are rare to come by. Being atlanta in 2nd year of rebuild ain't a bad thing either when all of your key players are 19-20.

This will be a former GM if he selects him top 5.

All the other draft choices are a question mark as far as im concerned... shoulder problems don't phase me at all compared to leg problems. We'll still have cap space to sign an elite pg or c down the road.

Meh

I'm not sure there is a "guy we need" in this draft unless there is a cant miss SF or C I'm missing

It all comes down to whether he can play the 3 on both ends of the floor.

While I really want a floor spacer at 3, if he can score efficiently there its ok. I just don't know that he has the footspeed and skill to guard 3s on D.

If we drafted him, we would need to get someone like Martell Webster to add more perimeter scoring, and AD would certainly need to see significantly more minutes at C, if he can handle it.

And I think if we do get a guy like that and expect him to play 3, we will need to get a quick, penetrating PG that can also shoot the 3 to compliment the big guys we have at 3-4-5.

Otto Porter is as close to a can't-miss prospect as we'll find at those positions.

Granted, this is looking to be a thoroughly mediocre draft.
