Commissioner Silver was recently on Woj's new podcast The Vertical, LINK and Zach Lowe's podcast LINK He was mostly there to talk about Rondo's suspension especially with Woj, but had some interesting things to say about other issues.

- Feels positively about the CBA negotiations in 2017. He didn't make any guarantees, but they are already hashing out issues with the players and the general mood is things are so good right now for both owners and players that a work stoppage is the last thing either side wants. Jordan, Shaq, Grant Hill, The Admiral, Penny are all owners or partial owners, so superstar players want to become owners one day which helps because "profit" is no longer a dirty word.
- They are looking at changes to the DLeague, nothing is firm right now but they have talked about expanding the draft to a 3rd round and giving teams 2 more roster spots that would essentially be reserved for DLeague players to give teams incentive to use and run their own teams.
- While talking about the cap and revenue sharing one of the points Silver made multiple times was they don't want a system where large market teams have a significant advantage. Parity is a goal according to Silver.
- There is no guarantee of profitability in the NBA, but if teams are well mangaged there's no reason they shouldn't be profitable. For the Chicken Littles that think the Pels are leaving with AD next year, they'd have to be more mismanaged than they were by Shinn to leave.
- Is in favor of ads on jerseys
- They continue to look at ways to reduce the length of the game. 10 years ago the average viewer watched about an hour of a 2.5 hour game, now they watch 45 minutes.

This is a terrible idea. I hate that soccer does this. NASCAR is even worse.

The D-League/added roster spots/third draft round troica is intriguing.

he can improve the NBA dramatically in one fell swoop...chop 15 games off the season. would eliminate back to backs, keep teams fresh and playing high quality basketball, eliminate "schedule losses", hopefully lessen injuries, and make the games themselves more valuable (less supply equals higher demand)

i know the owners will buck, but its a universal solution to many of the worst ills

The lockout shortened season that started Christmas Day was fantastic.

I agree, the start in Christmas Day was perfect.. Tons of great basketball with an audience that had nothing else to do. One of the most enjoyable starts to a season I can remember following.

It's the fans and TV rights holders that will buck. The owners aren't taking less money which means fans and TV rights holders would have to pay more per game. Nationally I don't think it'd be a problem, you're just shifting who ESPN/TNT gets to show on any given night, and by making each game more meaningful you might actually boost ratings. But locally, like the Lakers having $150 million per year deal for another 12 - 13 years, Time Warner probably wouldn't be too happy losing 20% of their inventory.

No doubt he is the best commissioner to his sport.

Woah. David "Basketball Reasons" Stern has something to say about this statement. He was one of the ballsiest commissioners we've ever seen and managed to completely revitalize the image of the league. Not to mention all he did to help keep the team in NOLA and secure us AD accidentally...

these are not "per game" deals though, right?
just divide 150MM by 66 instead of 82...
the advertising rates would have to go up, but presumably so would ratings. even if they didnt, work a deal with Time Warner to make them whole

as for the fans, i would GLADLY pay the same for 33 games that i pay for 41 (i never make them all anyway) if the product was better, and were played THU-MON instead of random weekdays which suck to drag my arse out to

anyway, everyone would benefit if the quality were better, the players were better rested and healthy, and the games became more of an event and less of a slog

Technically I think it's more like "We'll give you $X to broadcast Y games." Like the Pels contract is for 75 or 77 games I think. So unless every local multimillion dollar TV deal was willing to agree to new terms, it could get complicated. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, just that there are so many different stakeholders with long term deals in place it might not be very feasible.

Stern was GOAT, but isn't Silver a Stern acolyte?

The NBA is still the best run pro sports league either way.

Silver learned from the master. Silver seems to be carrying the torch well.

However, I absolutely agree the NBA would be better if the season were shortened to, say, 60 games, with the season beginning at Christmas. It won't happen, but it would be a better season and product overall.

I like Silver. His biggest success to me: He's developed a rapport with the players, which seems to never happen in pro sports lately. The NBA is so drama free in that regard. If the calling card for what needs to improve is less games, you're probably doing a damn good job.

Golden State and San Antonio don't have this problem because it isn't a real problem. The average roster spot accounts for 20 minutes per game, and the two team I mentioned don't overwork their best players and happen to be the two best teams in the league.

The wear and tear problem happens solely because of poor budgeting of minutes, not because there are too many games.
