Here's another one... (that I found interesting)

Carol Kaye: Session Legend Interview (full)

In this one the legendary session musician, who played on an estimated 10,000 recordings (over 50 years) and who was member of the 'Wrecking Crew'.... talks about musicians over the years, how sounds changed, and surprisingly where she thinks pop music is headed.

Not only are you very wrong, but you're missing out on a lot of great stuff. Sucks for you.

Just a byproduct of the times. People have lost soul, so has music.

Modern music is more about a snapshot in time than it is something that hits you on an emotional level. Lyrically it's the dark ages.

Good is subjective. I've searched every genre out there for something that will make me feel something, and there's nothing timeless out there.

There's a reason many people, even younger people are attracted to older music.

I mean, there's some well put together songs with generic lyrics and a good melody. I wouldn't call all modern music bad, but the artist has given way to the technician.

Just curious...how have you been searching? What older music makes you feel something?

I feel that most people who share your opinion are older generations who can't get past the music that was popular or that they liked when they were discovering themselves, i.e. Adolescents through college. I get it and fall into that trap sometimes myself, but the fact is that today, music is more accessible to fans and musicians. There's more music available than ever before. Of course that means that there is going to be more fluff and stuff you don't like, but if you can't find something you like today, and can only bring yourself to liking stuff that was mostly force fed decades ago, then I feel sorry for you. There's a ton of music out there for everyone.

I had no trouble identifying with music produced in the 90's. I still hear occasional new stuff I enjoy, but it's literally the needle in the haystack.

Its all a product of changing society, life is much more sterile, objective, and centered around a slice of life. Music reflects modern culture.

Not saying there's nothing good out there, but the ratio of terrible to good has never been worse. Pop music has always been 75% trash, but I'd say it's 100% trash currently.

We went through a similar dark ages in the mid-late 80's.

People that cry about music they dont personally like are annoying as shite

Growing up my dad was a hell of a banjo player and all I really heard was bluegrass and country around the house

I started listening to early rap and r&b in middle school but was a much bigger rock fan. Still listen to stones, zeppelin, floyd regularly. My all time fav bands are probably deftones and MMJ tho

All that :csb: shite aside, I probably listen to more new rap in my headphones at work every day than anything else. Alot of what people probably call mumble and just trap shite I guess. No none of it really stands out as masterpieces or whatever. I just like working and working out to it. Rap generally sucks live so I dont go to shows or anything. But theres a ton of solid producers out there constantly pumping out new stuff all the time which I like

If the hook is catchy and I like the beat I'll generally listen to it. It aint that serious

What exactly are you referring to as "pop"? What you hear on FM radio and tv? If that's the case, I pretty much agree.

There's a few recent hits that feel "timeless" to me:
"Uptown Funk" by Bruno Mars
"All Alright" and "Heavy is the Head" by Zach Brown Band
"Motivation" by the Hitchhiker
"I Hold Myself in Contempt" by Four Years Strong
"Hate It Here" by Wilco
"I was Born" by Menzingers
"Out of Time" by STP w/Chester Bennington

I listen to a lot of classic rock and there is a lot of modern music that is just as good if not better. I just don't think y'all have adapted to how music is relased/promoted now.

It's generally bad in any era.
The 70s had great rock music, but the pop music was awful, except for the soul music. And the disco, which was horrible, killed soul. Madonna took disco, turned it into dance, and made it tolerable in the 80s I suppose. And the 80s from a pop standpoint (not rock) was an improvement over the 70s.
I don't listen to the modern stuff, but can't imagine it's any worse than before.

He makes some good points but falls flat on other points.

He says in the old days, you had little access to music so what music you had you spent a lot of time with, listening over and over, and even if you didn't completely like it at first you would learn to grow to appreciate it over time.

Then he says with new music you might not like it at first, but because you hear it over and over again in public, you're brainwashed into liking it.

I fail to see why these two scenarios are much different. In the former, you're just as likely to start subconsciously liking the music because you've already spent the money on it (sunk cost fallacy).

That having been said, he's spot on in many other points.

Current "new" music I've been digging recently, Leon Bridges and Mayer Hawthorne. Neither sound like they come from this point in time.
