Where does Neil Young rank among songwriters all-time?

He was obviously the strongest member of CSNY and well-respected by the Laurel Canyon crowd during the late '60s and early '70s, but many were turned off by his more progressive string of albums following his 1974 release On the Beach.
Does he make the top 5, top 10, or is the Godfather of Grunge just an immensely overrated writer and musician?

Are we talking American song-writers? Or just song-writers in general?
Even amongst the Americans, the top 5 is hard to break into. Not saying he doesn't belong there.

David Crosby has said himself that Neil was the superior songwriter. His vocals aren't quite on par with Graham Nash or Crosby, but they're still pretty good, and he is a much better guitarist than Stephen Stills.

He has the proud distinction of being one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century because he was there from the start of rock 'n' roll, but he's not much of a songwriter in terms of lyrics and arrangements.

I disagree with you big time on this. Within the confines of early R&B and rock and roll, his lyrics stand head and shoulders above the rest.

Way up there. He's done some crap, but his best is absolutely sublime. And there's a lot of it.

I think it's all a matter of personal taste and opinion, but I would certainly consider him among the greatest songwriters of all time.

Top 10 for sure. Amazingly, I think he's underrated. He'll probably never get the respect he truly deserves.
