When It Was Radio Or Nothing

Remembering some of the really cool Radio Stations and Disc Jockeys from back in the day. When I was a teen (circa '60s) the only means of listening to music was the Radio. Personal Stereo Systems for kids were not readily available until the 70's. I can still remember tuning into certain DJs who were playing all the cool stuff and saying all the cool words.
Some I remember:
KAAY Beaker Street, Little Rock
WLCS Baton Rouge, DJ Kawalski
WFMF Loose Radio, Baton Rouge
Our only other cool music listening was on TV Shows like Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and Midnight Special........any of you old rockers remember?

I remember WBRH opening the rock show every day at 3 with Limelight. I thought that was cool.

While not quite as old, I remember having my blank tapes ready and sitting by the stereo waiting to hit record when a good song came on.

I've considered doing this with WHYR 96.9 recently. They play so much good music, but I have no clue what any of it is and they don't have a playlist or anything on their site. I've emailed them a couple times asking for a playlist from one of their shows, but they've never responded.
I really want to find this one about having sex in a sugarcane field. My SO would definitely get a "kick" out of that one, if you know what I mean.

I still have tapes laying around here from the Loose Radio days. I was real into the NatLamp hour and some of the weird shows like The Fifth Tower Of Inverness.
Jimmy Beyer was also DJing for one of the AM stations around the 1300 mark and playing great stuff. He had a daytime show and made the workday fly by.

Loose Late Show at the Paramount, midnight, was a really fun time. They shut the doors and let you smoke the place up with no interference.

I grew up listening to WLCS . Kasey Kasem was as far as I got. Then a weird thing happened. My Orthodonist on govt street played albums and ....wait for it....FM radio....while he put my braces in. It BLEW my mind. You mean I can buy ...the whole album, not just the 45. Not just top 40? I was all in after that. Any FM station I could find. It seemed like the coolest thing in the world to 11 year old Pimp.

WKTQ - "13Q" in Pittsburgh was awesome in the mid 70's. Evening shows they would do whole commercial free albums. I remember recording Zappa's "We're Only In it for the Money" and listening to it nearly endlessly. Recorded on something a lot like:
I dreamed of upgrading the tape recorder with a reel-to-reel someday.
Sure, nostalgia makes the music seem better and there was a whole lot of cheese on the radio too. But damn, there was great stuff on the airwaves. People would listen to anything interesting.

WRNO in New Orleans had a similar format playing albums in their entirety on Sunday nights. Went to school tired many Monday morning from late night listening.
They also played the King Biscuit Flour Hour and Dr. Demento shows.
At the end of the year, I remember my Oldest Brother locking himself in our bedroom taping the top 100 songs of the year. He would announce his intentions a week in advance, put a do not disturb sign on the door and I would pity the fool that would ruin his recording session.
I wonder how long that would take.

Anybody remember the King Biscuit Flour Hour?

WMMS - Cleveland, Ohio. Awesome stuff. Used to love the King Biscuit Flower Hour.
I lived in Pensacola when I was young and my mom worked for a radio station. She'd bring demo 45's home to me. I had a nice little collection including Elvis, The Beatles, etc. When I went away to college she gave them all away. Thanks a lot, mom.

KSMB 94.1 LAFAYETTE. I REMEMBER IT WELL. SOMTIMES I COULD RECIEVE IT AND SOMETIMES IT WAS WEAK. I WOULD TRY TO CATCH IT AS MUCH AS I COULD.
