Immortal words issued by David Bowie.

Make no mistake, Bowie got where he got, having been lucky enough to discover Mick Ronson.

Ronno was the man, and had he lived longer, you Joe Bonamassa freaks would realize it.

Mick Ronson, GOAT.

Roar, rumble, composure, composer, dude had it all.

Over and out.

Ronson is a great guitarist, agreed. But Bowie would've been Bowie no matter who he played with. He turned Iggy Pop songs into top 40 hits. Bowie could do anything.

I love China Girl. I love Iggy Pop. I'm just pointing out that Bowie turned the deranged ramblings of a heroin addict into a top 40 pop song.

Bowie was a magician. He also "discovered" Stevie Ray Vaughan, so maybe the Ronson thing wasn't luck (using discovered as loosely as possible). Bowie could sniff out talent.

He didn't discover Adrian Belew per se, but he stole him away from Zappa after Zappa discovered him. He just had great vision.

I was listening to Drive-In Saturday the other day and was thinking about how incredible Ronson's guitar is in that song. The long, winding note he hits on the verses right before the chorus really gets me.

he didn't discover SRV

SRV was on that one song and about to go out on tour with Bowie b/c his management said SRV's band could open. That was a lie so SRV pulled out of the tour right before it started and their album went big in a hurry anyway.

Bowie also stole the riff for "Rebel Rebel" from Ronson so he also recognized a great hook when he heard it

Iggy Pop was great even without Bowie. Passenger and Search and Destroy are two of the best songs of all time.

Lust For Life isn't even his biggest hit.

That opening Chinese-sounding riff DID come from Nile Rodgers, who co-produced the album with Bowie. Here's a quote from a recent interview with Rodgers (and I saw him say this live recently on a Bowie documentary).

quote:

The conflict of David Bowie making a commercial record is in itself an arty, cool thing, like, "Wow, that’s fun." Hence my riff on "China Girl," which I thought I was going to get fired over because it’s so corny. But he heard it and went, "That’s amazing!" I was like, "Do you really mean it?" And he’s like "That’s genius."
