King Nothing is a damn fine tune. We used that one as our run out/warm up song for basketball when I was in high school. We whites were almost dunking it got us so jacked up.

The version of Hero of the Day with the orchestra gives me chills to this day from some really good memories listening to it when I was younger.

Load got a lot of crap from the diehards who thought even the Black album sucked and was too poppy. So... that's the narrative most who'd never listened to it ran with following its release. I thought all Metallica was good Metallica when I was younger, so I was a fan.

They were trying to go a different direction and actually succeeded IMO, which they haven't been able to do since. Successfully changing your sound is something that is a pretty rare accomplishment in popular music, period. It got hated on by the '80s thrash metal fans who wanted them to put out the same thing forever. Bear in mind that those same people disliked the Black Album! I think it's a good album.

Yep, they did. And actually, a lot of fans got pissed when they released the Black Album a few years earlier because their musical style changed from the previous album (And Justice For All). Artists evolve and their music changes.

hardcore Metallica fans thinks they soldout with the Black Album. It is they're masterpiece (but the MTV era)

Load was another successful reinvention. Great albums.

St. Anger sucks.

Ive always loved Load and Reload. Just because it isnt thrash doesnt mean its not good music. I also love blues and their bluesly elements really shined through on both of those albums. The guitar tone was pretty good and they had a ton of fantastic heavy rock riffs throughout both of those albums. I also think it's James' strongest vocal performance of all of their efforts. Anytime I hear a song from either of these albums, it brings me back to my childhood.

Until It Sleeps is one of the worst songs of all time, IMO. Metallica took the riff to "Push It" by Salt and Peppa and then played rehashed metal all around it.

It's not because it was a "changed Metallica" -- it's because I just hate the song. I never understood its popularity.

Ride the Lightning was the first Metallica album I owned, and I dug the shite out of it, Kill, Master, and Justice.....however, The Black Album was their masterpiece IMO.

Bands evolve......shite, listen to Tool's progression from the EP to Undertow to Aenima to Lateralus (didn't really dig 10,000 Days). Or Radiohead's progression from Pablo Honey to The Bends to OK Computer to Kid A.

Pink Floyd is another stark contrast...listen to early Floyd (Piper at the Gates of Dawn/Saucerful of Secrets) and compare it to Darkside/Animals/Wish You Were Here.

Sometimes bands evolve in the wrong direction tho....(I'm looking at you 311 and Incubus)

Agree 100%

Track by track:

Ain't My Bitch - sort of fun, but kind of a throwaway track

2X4 - I like it, but it's not terribly special

The House Jack Built - classic

Until It Sleeps - classic

King Nothing - classic

Hero of the Day - classic

Bleeding Me - Top 5 classic

Cure - the only one I actively dislike

Poor Twisted Me - awesome

Wasting My Hate - very good

Mama Said - classic

The Thorn Within - classic

Ronnie - top 3 classic (I know this will generate substantial outrage, but it is one of my favorite grooves of all time)

The Outlaw Torn - very good

It's a great album and I listen to it a lot. Re-load and Garage Inc. are great too. St. Anger has some good songs, but horrific production. Death Magnetic is a modern-day masterpiece.

When's the next one coming out?

Disagree with that last part. Death Magnetic was a damn fine album, although they could have released a cover of Disney songs and it would have been a masterpiece compared to St. Anger.

That's not an opinion - that's anarchic insanity. I'm prepared to defend a lot of different stances, but this is not one of them. Please offer some sort of explanation that involves your phone's auto-correct screwing up or something.

I'd say it's VERY good! It's aged better than people would've predicted when it was released.
