I know this is a longshot but do any of you musician types own the truss rod repair tool made by StewMac?

Are you talking about the Rescue Kit? I don't have one but I'm curious why you're asking.

The nut on a neck I have is maxed out. I need to cut it and add some shims (washers etc) in order to get a bit more out of it.

I assume from that description that your rod is tightened to its limit. Keep in mind that a nut that is as tight as it will go means that rod inside, if fully functional, is more than likely doing everything it can for you already. If I am thinking of the repair tool you are seeking, it's made to address stripped nuts, stripped rod ends, broken off nuts ... not to buy you more backbow.

Be VERY, VERY careful or you may end up with a much bigger issue in which to address.

Listen to the man, Broke. If you remove some of the wood around the truss rod and then add more threads to it (which is what the rescue kit does), the net result will just be a shorter truss rod. Once it's as tight as it can go, that's as tight as it can go.

I'm going to do it anyway. This isn't a neck that I particularly need. If I ruin it I will just get another one. It's not a huge deal for me.
