For the purpose of this, please omit solo artists (Elvis, Johnny Cash, Prince, Jimmy Buffett).

Who are your top 5 best American bands?

The Eagles
Grateful Dead
The Doors
The Beach Boys
KISS

The Allman Brothers
Steely Dan
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles

Just some of my most played ones on Spotify, but I guess I would call them my favorites.

For me, there are a lot of very good American Bands but difficult to pick a top 5. I'll go with my favorites:

The Allman Brothers
Skynyrd
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Beastie Boys
The Grateful Dead

I would have put Simon & Garfunkel in my list but assuming they do not qualify. Other honorable mentions include STP, CCR, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, The Beach Boys, The Doors (any of these could make my top 5 upon further reflection).

The Talking Heads
The Band

I'm counting the Band as an American band, if not them, throw in The Velvet Underground. Top 5 was easy, not sure who I would slot in to number 6, probably Tom Petty, The Doors, The Velvet Underground or something like that. Lots of band just below that though.
