For the purpose of this, please omit solo artists (Elvis, Johnny Cash, Prince, Jimmy Buffett).

Who are your top 5 best American bands?

The Eagles
Grateful Dead
The Doors
The Beach Boys
KISS

1. Allman Brothers
2. Talking Heads
3. Pearl Jam
4. Grateful Dead

Not sure on #5. I guess The Band doesn't count since they were mostly Canadian. I guess it'd be The Eagles, even though Hotel California is the only good album they ever made.

You gotta include The Beach Boys. Leaving them off would be insane

Am I supposed to list my five favorite American bands (solely the ones I think are the best) or a list that tries to measure cultural impact, popularity, critical reception and influence?

Don't really know after that. Too close and could throw out about a dozen names for 4 and 5, but if I only had these 3 bands music to listen to I would be happy.

I like this list. Sub the Dead for The Band if you want to go full 'Merica, or maybe switch with CCR.
