How old is everybody posting on here?
Reason I ask, I am 43.
43 as well. The Smiths were the band that made me really appreciate "alternative" music. This rad older chick in my neighborhood let me borrow her Meat Is Murder cassette, and I never gave it back to her I loved it so much. This was 8th grade so around 86 or 87. I guess I was already somewhat into Talking Heads, but hadn't yet really dug much further than Burning Down the House and Wild, Wild Life.
I still have close friends today around my age that have never heard of them, which blows my mind. Most recognize How Soon Is Now, but never knew who played it. One swore up and down to me it was The Cure.

You HAVE to listen to I Know It's Over if you haven't already.

Is 1983 just finally so long ago that The Smiths and Morrisey seem like The Big Bopper did to me?
My 48 yo self did not need to read that statement. Ouch, that smarts. I'm just going to go ahead and check into a nursing home now before they run out of beds.
But as to the OP; Lots of great Smith's songs mentioned so far - I'll add Vicar in a Tutu.

I'm in my early 20s and most people around my age don't know who they are and it always surprises me. Such a great band.
And while I have a lot I love...Cemetery Gates probably remains my favorite song by them.

Sorry man. There will be plenty of beds by the time we get that old.

Unhappy Birthday is one of many favorites.
Strangeways Here We Come is a bad arse album.

The main reason I listened to The Smiths was b/c of the chicks.

The Headmaster Ritual
Should have been mentioned in top three at start of this thread.
Listen to this loud on a really good audio system.
Eta walked into record store next to chimes in 1985 and this was playing and everything I knew about music changed that day.

I asked a buddies kids about them the other day? And this is a college kid and music nerd. He had zero idea who they were? Can you be a music nerd and not know of The Smiths?
I don't know if you could be a music nerd and not know The Smiths. Unless he strictly listens to one genre (hip-hop, metal, etc) that might not have much overlap with The Smiths.

Maybe...but Meat is Murder is one of the greatest of all time. That one was a game changer for me and is where Marr and Rourke are at their best (before Morrissey became the focal point).

It's probably an unfortunate thing that Andy Rourke gets overshadowed by Marr and Morrissey because he definitely holds his own especially on Meat is Murder.
Louder than Bombs, I should have said the whole album but mainly for the "b-sides" songs. Meat is Murder or Queen seems so passe to say. I just want to be the cool guy.

I have all the respect in the world for Zappa but I couldn't disagree more with his take on how soon is now. That song will never stop being nothing short of I ncredible. No matter how many times it's played. The wall of sound effect still blows me away to this day. Not to mention some of the bands' best lyrics.
