The Marilyn Manson Discussion and Education Thread *Update on pg. 3*

Before I start, I would like to institute one simple rule for this thread:
If you are not interested in discovering/listening/analyzing/discussing the music in this thread, do not post in it.
The purpose of this thread is to share and discuss music and, hopefully, increase the interest level of this artist on this board.
Now, let’s begin.
Marilyn Manson is a true artist; he’s a musician (as most of you know), filmmaker, painter, and an actor. Obviously, in this thread, we’ll be discussing his music. Marilyn Manson is by far and away my favorite artist for a variety of reasons. The first, and foremost, reason is that he puts an extraordinary amount of thought into his art. He is a true lyrical genius. (I’m assuming that there will be little to no interest for this thread, so I will not be going into great depth when it comes to analyzing his art. If you interested in a very in depth look visit: nachtkabarett.com.)
A quick overview of Marilyn Manson (the band and man):
Marilyn Manson’s birth name was Brian Hugh Warner and it’s still his legal name; his stage name was/is a representation of the band’s central theme. Juxtaposing the names of two 1960s American cultural icons, Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson, represented “the dichotomy of good and evil, and the existence of both, together, in every whole.” (Quote taken from Wikipedia)
Marilyn Manson wasn’t the only name involving two American cultural icons. Here are past/current members that shared the same trait (in no particular order):
Twiggy Ramirez - (Twiggy Lawson and Richard Ramirez)
Madonna Wayne Gacy - (Madonna and John Wayne Gacy)
Daisy Berkowitz - (Daisy Duke and David Berkowitz)
Ginger Fish - (Ginger Rogers and Albert Fish)
Gidget Gein - (Ed Gein and Gidget)
Zsa Zsa Speck - (Zsa Zsa Gabor and Richard Speck)
Olivia Newton Bundy - (Olivia Newton-John and Ted Bundy)
Sara Lee Lucas - (Henry Lee Lucas and Sara Lee)
Originally being called Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, the band was formed in 1989 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Since then the band has released 7 studio albums, three EPs, and a live album.

Now, for our first topic, we’ll be discussing the “Triptych.” The “Triptych” is a story that is made up of three albums: Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals, and Holy Wood. Despite being made up of three albums, it’s considered one body of work. Also, the order of the story does not follow the order of release. The story is in this order: Holy Wood, Mechanical Animals, and then Antichrist Superstar. It is considered to be Manson’s best work.
Here’s a quote from Manson explaining the connection between the albums:
"[On 'Antichrist Superstar',] I was being grandiose, saying that I would be this icon that would have a lot of power in my hands and be able to decide many people's future. That ended up being true. Life imitated art and the story started writing itself.' Mechanical Animals' represented the middle of the story and 'Holy Wood...' ties all the pieces together at the start. It's a parable."
The story, itself, is fairly confusing and complex. Manson has not given a clear explanation (likely because he doesn’t have one to give). If you would like to read the generally accepted theories, visit: LINK
I would get into the themes of the albums, but I’m afraid no one may be interested. So, for now, this is where I stop. I don’t want to spend a substantial amount of time putting information together, only to find that there’s no interest on this board. So, in short, the Triptych is social commentary on modern society.
If you have never listened to Manson’s music, or have only been a casual listener, I have a challenge for you (if you are interested). Listen to any of the three albums that are part of the Triptych and see if you like them. Remember to pay close attention to the lyrics, as they are some of the most powerful/intelligent lyrics you will ever hear.
Here are the full albums on youtube:
Antichrist Superstar - Playlist
Mechanical Animals - Playlist (Ignore the Sweet Dreams cover, that's not a part of Mechanical Animals)
Holy Wood - Playlist
If you do listen to one, let me know what you think.
IF YOU ENJOY THE MUSIC, BUY IT.
So, any thoughts on the music, are you fan already? Did you try to listen to Manson in the past, but couldn’t get into it? Do you understand what Manson is trying to say? Are you a close-minded fool who refuses to listen to certain types of music because you let the opinions of others rule your life? Let us know.

I read his book.
He's really a normal dude when compared to what the media makes him out to be.
His music is good too.

Exactly, I'm just trying to get more people to appreciate his work.

Not sure if this is a really elaborate troll, but I think Mechanical Animals is one of the best rock albums I've ever heard (and I'm not really a Manson fanboy or anything).

This is not a troll.
And yeah, I think MA is a perfect record.

He has an obsession with naked women and vaginas as portrayed in the majority of his artwork.

Is this really a problem?

Nope
I didn't think so, but it seemed like that was what you were insinuating.

I love Marilyn Manson. My two favorite albums are Portrait of an American Family and Antichrist Superstar. I was not a big fan of Mechanical Animals though.
I don't listen to his music as much as I did when I was younger, but I still have my favorites on my iPod.

Did you listen to the new single? If so, what did you think of it?

I did listen to it. I liked it, not as much as his earlier stuff, but I definitely liked it.
I guess I'm a bigger fan of his older work (prior to 1998).

Antichrist Superstar is a great NIN album that Manson did vocals on. The dude is good at self promotion and keeping his name out there but that's about it. Once he and Reznor had their falling out I stopped caring about Manson's music.

A lot of his fans are this way, but I like just about everything he's done up to this point. The diversity in his music is probably what I like the most.

I'm sorry that you feel this way, he has continued to make fantastic music with strong statements since ACSS. I think you're missing out, but to each his own.

I'm not a huge fan of his music (though Beautiful People is an all-time favorite), but I find him interesting in interviews.
A classic one is his interview with Bill O'Reilly
LINK
I'm also a huge fan of O'Reilly, but he came across a little silly in this videos.

Go for it. I'd be interested.

I'll be honest with you, I don't really feel like writing that up right now.
I could go on for a long time, time I don't have at the moment. But, since you're interested, you can read the MansonWiki articles which cover the themes fairly well:
Antichrist Superstar
Mechanical Animals
Holy Wood
Also, as I listed above, look around this site for even more analysis: LINK
