Somewhere there's a dilettante music fan who's a little too much into the Church this week, who is wetting his little pantaloons that other dilettante music fans are falling for his worthless, tossed off rankings.

I've seen worse.. (Pitchfork)... Could've atleast replaced one of those Church records with a hip hop album (Paul's Boutique; Straight Outta Compton; It Takes A Nation..)

Lots yelling for Prince and Hip Hop. Is this a personal preference thread or an affirmative action thread?

FTR, Purple Rain and License to Ill would make my list.

Prince had a run of stone classics during the 80s -- Purple Rain, Sign O The Times and 1999. There were some great hip hop albums in the 80s - Paul's Boutique, It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Raising Hell. All of those were gigantic critically and commercially and had a lot bigger influence than the two freaking Church albums on the list. Shoot, Thriller ought to probably be on the list. It really looks odd to talk about the best popular music of the 80s and not include Prince, Michael Jackson and early rap music. I'm wondering if this isn't just a list of the best alternative albums of the decade...although they missed some real obvious ones, like Daydream Nation or anything from the Replacements.

It's a very good album to be sure, but it's no way near the greatest album of the 1980's. Top 50 for sure though.

Now, if you wanted to compile a list of the gloomiest albums, then Disintegration could definitely be number one.

Bull , Disintegration is an absolute masterpiece. I can see you haven't listened to the entire album!
