I've purchased four of their albums off of Amazon MP3 in the last year (Breakfast in America, Crime of the Century, Crisis? What Crisis?, and Even in the Quietest Moments...). What is the board's opinion of this band? Where do they fall when it comes to British prog/art rock?

Those are some of my favorite albums. Breakfast was OK but the other three are in my opinion outstanding and very underrated. I think people tend to discount them because of the commercial success of their radio hits like Logical Song. But the music that came before all that was very interesting, well performed and well produced. I definitely consider them progressive but in a different way than bands like Yes, ELP and Genesis.
Me and my friends just about wore the grooves off of Crime of the Century my freshman year at LSU. So that album will always have a special place in my heart because it reminds me so much of that time in my life.

They do have that mainstream appeal, but I find them more interesting than, say YES, because their songs don't go overboard YES tends to do.

Hopefully you purchased the deluxe editions of Breakfast In America & Crime Of The Century....the bonus concerts are a great addition

Unfortunately no.... They were $5 on Amazon MP3 when I bought them. Should've dropped the extra $7

There's also a live concert recording that was made I believe in the early 80's. I think it's called Paris, iirc. It's worth the money.
I got to see them one time in concert, in Toronto in '79. This was on the Breakfast in America tour but they did plenty of songs from the previous albums as well. Fool's Overture was absolutely incredible.

Don't sleep on "Brother, Where you Bound". Half of a concept album. Good half.

Goodbye Stranger one of my favorite songs from old country to the heaviest of metal.
Just a great goose-bump type vibe in that song.

At least a couple times a year I listen to every Supertramp album from beginning to end...they are all fantastic.
My Kinda Lady is probably my favorite tune.

They are far from one of my favorites but I have most of their releases.
They have much respect from me.

They never really had the commercial success of Pink Floyd or even Yes, nor the critical acclaim of King Crimson and those folks.
However, I thought they put out some great songs and were obviously highly talented instrumentalists. They had more layers that most of the prog rock, too, more like prog rock sensibilities/"vibe", but more traditional AOR song structure and production techniques used.
I dig Supertramp.
