a song I've been working on I made from fricking around with Blackbird from the Beatles and Fast Car from Tracy Chapman. It happens.

I'd say it's close to impossible to create something that sounds 100% unique.

It's remotely similar, but nowhere near the pinnacle of Page's plagiarism. shite, John Fogerty ripped himself off more than that, and we all know how that trial ended.

I'm a huge LZ fan but for years Jimmy Page denied even knowing who Jake Holmes was,or having heard his version of Dazed and Confused. This is absurd on two counts: Jake Holmes opened once for the Yardbirds and Page's bandmates swear that Jimmy Page heard Jake Holmes play Dazed and Confused that night and was so blown away he went and bought Jake Holmes album the next day. Also the LZ version has the same title and same walking bass line. Only some of the lyrics were changed. Unbelievable. Holmes sued a few years ago and won an out of court settlement.

Led Zeppelin's Plant, Page to face 'Stairway to Heaven' trial
quote:

Led Zeppelin's lead singer Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page must face a U.S. jury trial over whether they stole opening chords for their 1971 classic "Stairway to Heaven."

In a decision on Friday, U.S. District Judge Gary Klausner in Los Angeles said "Stairway" and the 1967 instrumental "Taurus" by the band Spirit were similar enough to let a jury decide whether Plant and Page were liable for copyright infringement.

A trial is scheduled for May 10.
Will this get Zep off the hook?

Davy Graham - "Cry Me A River" (1959)

It's an arrangement (which can't be copyrighted). Can Page claim he was stealing from this rather than Spirit? JP is on record as a fan of Graham. It would be wonderfully ironic if admitting to plagiarism would help Zep win a plagiarism lawsuit.

No one will ever change their opinion of Led Zeppelin over this

Let me stand as a prime example of that bolded statement. Led Zeppelin will forever be one of the most awesome fricking bands.

And Stairway is a great song. Just tainted by this

I personally will never give this suit the first thought when I hear 'Stairway'.

Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock and roll band to ever grace this planet. I don't care if they stole a little here and there or not. All artists do. Zeppelin stole it and made it their own.

This discussion has been around for years. Zeppelins version is known by many as the best rock song ever. I think they got dibs.

Ripping off lyrics or an entire instrumental arrangement is one thing, but a few notes in a melody is just nonsense, there are a finite number of notes and finite number of combinations in which they can be played. The opening guitar riff to Hotel California is straight from Beethoven's "fur elise" but there is probably no one still living that can sue the Eagles.

1. That's a common progression in English folk music.
2. It's similar, though not identical.
3. Zeppelin toured with Spirit and several members of Zep often spoke fondly of how much the group influenced them.
4. Zeppelin has a long history of ripping off songs and making them awesome (see "Rock 'n Roll", "When the Levee Breaks", "Bring It On Home", "Livin' Lovin' Made", ect)

Nah, most music borrows from something else. I don't see enough similarity between the two.
