Posted by geauxbrown on 12/26/16 at 7:22 pm00
Motown, Stax, Philly, Muscle Shoals, Oakland..... What's your favorite and why?
Stax and Oakland checking in. I like it gritty and unpolished.

And there was a NO soul sound, even if it was not all that successful nationally aside from "Tell It Like It Is"

Good point. I remember reading where Maurice White (Earth Wind and Fire) who was from Memphis and played on sessions, moved to Chicago to do soul sessions there.

Philly.
Gamble & Huff had a great ear for talent and knew how to showcase it. Even the artists that didn't make it big (Billy Paul for instance) have satisfying catalogs where you can discover treasure troves of songs that should have been classics. Love them!
