To me this is a fascinating song. It starts and ends slow, with a completely different song in the middle. I wonder how many people started to listen, but skipped the song because of the slow beginning.
The story is the song is intriguing too. Brenda and Eddie, meeting for dinner years after their relationship ended... time jump back in time to upbeat song about their relationship... time jump back to dinner to end the song. Amazing.
Thoughts?

A happy sounding sad, sad song.

He brought out the Preservation Jazz Band at Jazzfest 2013 after the part where he says "song about New Orleans"

It was pretty cool. MY GF loves Billy Joel, and I was only partial to him at the time. But his live show converted me

This is probably one of my favorite Billy Joel songs. It really shows just how talented he is.

I always thought that was a really cool name for a song for some reason.

great song. 70's Billy Joel is the best and that even includes Streetlife Serenade.

Bottle of red...bottle of white...

I think it's one of those songs that you start to appreciate more as you grow older. Everyone probably knows a "Brender and Eddie".

The Broadway show "Movin' Out" story sort of "retrofits" that story into a bunch of Joel songs, including Anthony, Goodnight Saigon, Allentown, etc., but Scenes froms the basic skeleton of the overall story.

Amazing.

Boomer culture is an intriguing tapetry - Joel's music is some of the highest quality there is.

Great song from a great album.

I think Joel is underrated. He has many 'relationship' gems that don't get much mention: All For Leyna, Laura, This Is The Time

Does anyone know what song he is referencing with the line "throw a dime in the box play the song about New Orleans"? I think it might be The Animals version of "House of the Rising Sun" but I can't find the answer anywhere...

I was always pretty apathetic about this song...until I saw him perform it at Jazz Fest. Good stuff.

Billy Joel was inspired by the Abbey Road Medley to write Scenes. It's one of my top Billy Joel songs. But I've always liked Turnstiles more than The Stranger even though The Stranger is his most popular and critically acclaimed album.

It's my older daughter's favorite Joel song.

I really like it and the story. It has a similar vibe to Same Auld Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg and Ten Years Gone by Led Zeppelin - a specific bittersweet story about a lost love in the past.

As flawed as Joel is as a person, he's a phenomenal songwriter, piano player and performer.

The Stranger is such a great album. Someone should divorce Billy Joel every few years, just to give him bitter material to work with.
