The Beatles did it right...they took the world by storm, put out tons of material in a 7-8 year span and then split before any sort of decline.
Unlike 99.9% of bands/artists, there is no point in their discography where you put something on and say "yeah they were clearly past their peak at this point". In fact, you can argue that their last recorded album (Abbey Road) was their best.

This reminds me of something I thought of the other day, and that's that the Beatles got famous before they ever really had their style of musicianship. Musically, those last two albums(and maybe the White Album) are really the only ones that show traces of the future trajectory of the individual Beatles.

Oh Darling! and I Want You (She's so Heavy) are my favorite two off that album. I'm not into a lot of their happy shite.
