So you think that song is about a particular person?

No, but I also don't think it's directed at every Southern man. Many Southern men at the time of its writing were black. It's definitely not directed at them. If you take offense to it, perhaps it is your guilty conscience?

It's why I don't go to Ted Nugent, Bruce Springsteen, or Greenday shows.

Of all the times Ive seen Bruce, the only time he's ever gotten political on stage was at Jazz Fest after Katrina... and that was welcomed... He usually keeps it light and fun..

I'm not saying he hasn't at other times and I know he is opinionated in interviews, etc... I just really haven't seen it at his shows..

I don't take personal offense for the reason you're getting at. I do think if Young wanted to go after a more specific group, he would have chosen a more specific word.

It's always funny to be lectured about being open minded by someone that's not open minded.

Or have a musician tell you he's not here for your entertainment. He's here to teach you how to think. Which is what he said in that interview. But he also shite on everybody from Alabama and called them simpletons. That part was cool.

Pretty sure he was saying that with the idea that he doesn't put on an arena rock style barn burner every night. As for the simpleton thing, he also implied the same thing towards others in states that aren't considered southern. And he's spot fricking on. So yea, I thought it was cool.

He made an Alabama joke. Big deal.

He also followed it up with commentary that his issue isn't with Alabama solely but with people that were willing to bend their morals as he saw it and those are all over including states that are idealized.

And heaven forbid the guy considers himself an artist and not an entertainer. His point is very fair that he is out there trying to create and share a thoughtful perspective on the world and not just focus group the heck out of formulaic mass consumed product.

If you want to beat up this album- I think he dropped the ball on the story a couple times. It's always his strength but on a song like hope the high road I feel like he dropped the ball in any real character development or narrative. I don't think this is his sharpest writing ever but he has set the bar incredibly high on that front.

I do question how anyone's truly deeply offended by almost any of the actual statements he makes in these songs though, unless you had your mind made up that being on the other team made him bad before you even hit play. Hell, these days he seems far less offensive as a human being than just about any era that I'm familiar with him from.
