I have been considering setting up a dedicated Mono Turntable to enjoy the the true mono recording of old mono albums (which I have a lot of). I have an old receiver that has a Mono Switch to allow that choice and I am re-furbishing an old turntable from the 70's as a 2nd play option. I have asked here and read some input on the subject, but not seen much otherwise. I suppose the first step would be acquiring a compatible Mono Cartridge and Stylus, but not sure what is available. Any thoughts, input, information is appreciated. I did find some discussion online I have linked. Thanks

The posts those folks made in the link you provided are pretty accurate.

There are 2 ways to do mono...the REAL way--one channel, one speaker, and a mono cart...and the other way--2 speakers through an integrated amp with a mono button, and a mono cart.

I assume you will be doing it the latter, which is not wrong, per se, but it adds a sense of depth and sound stage that a single speaker doesn't project.

In your case, just get a mono cart and press the mono button and you should be good.

THIS LINK is to the mono cart page of Ortofon. Read the entire page and all the cart descriptions. The 2M cart is around $200 I believe--maybe less. There are differences among the mono carts and it is explained fairly well.

There are other cartridge manufacturers that make mono as well, but they aren't inexpensive.

I am also assuming that your phono pre amp is a Moving Magnet (MM) only? Make sure the cart has enough output (needs to be a high output cart).
A Moving Coil (MC) cart is usually a low output (.25mv to around .6mv).

The big online players usually carry the entry level Ortofon mono carts.

Also...enabling the "mono" button deactivates the RIAA equalization curve, which became the standard a couple years after the stereo format was introduced.

You can read more about that Here

Now I am even more curious about the true Mono Amp and the single speaker set up. I can see the beauty even more now in the old Mono Amp you recently re-furbished.
