I submit one of the most powerful scenes in recent film history.

Rules of Attraction, with Harry Nilsson - WIthout You playing in the background.

"Background music" is generally taken to mean music coming from a source in the film's action, that can be heard by the characters: i.e. music played by musicians, radio, TV, CD players, or other devices

"The End" in AN, "Rock Around The Clock" in Blackboard Jungle or "Jump Into The Fire" in Goodfellas would not qualify

Great choice. I was thinking the same thing before I opened the thread.

Daniel Lanois' work on Slingblade really drives the scenes.

Killing Doyle

Also Jimmy Page's work on the Death Wish movies.

The song: The Weight
The band: The Band
The movie: Easy Rider

Don't know if this qualifies as background music or whatever, but it kicks arse … or desert sand as the case may be.

Roy Orbison - In Dreams

Who wouldn't like a movie where the bad guy inhales nitrous before he fricks or murders?

Yes it was. And I RARELY get that feeling from anything in any movie. But that one kinda made my guts wrench a little.

The first scene that came to mind for me was the desert scene in Natural Born Killers with Nine Inch Nails, Something I Can Never Have. It's been about 18 years or so since I've seen it so I watched it again and it wasn't exactly as I remembered it. I thought it was at night with the song a tiny bit more prominent. I'll submit it anyway though.

It is. A very harrowing scene in an otherwise forgettable movie.

Anything from Glory or Empire of the Sun.

Both soundtracks are incredible and add significant intensity to their scenes.
