Both are considered the "King of Soul Music". Both died tragically at a young age while in the prime of their careers and both were early inductees in the Rock n Roll HOF.
Do you prefer the smooth and soft sound of Sam Cooke or the powerfully emotional voice of Otis Redding?

Sam Cooke - Bring it on home to me
Otis Redding - Try a little Tenderness

My vote is Otis, because I love the fact that you can feel the emotion in his voice

Also his cover of Cooke's "A change is gonna come" is one of my favorite songs of all-time

Cooke's voice was velvet smooth and soulful - almost Nat King Cole with soul. His music was a little softer in delivery as well.

Otis had a more sincere sound, and almost bridged the gap between old school soul and "upstart" rhythm and blues. Otis had a little deeper register, as well.

Each delivered his songs extremely well. I wouldn't want Redding to sing Cooke's songs or vice versa. I would want Cooke to sing Gospel and Redding to sing rock and roll, if they changed genres.

I can't pick one. Two incredible artists. Too many studio highlights to list. Both have some terrific live work in their history as well.

Otis Redding : Live at Monterey Pop

I went to a Q&A with D. A. Pennebaker, who directed Monterey Pop, and he said that Otis' performance was one of the most moving things he'd ever witnessed.

Sam Cooke - Live Harlem Square

Needs no introduction.

Otis. I love Sam Cooke but Otis is top 5 favorite musicians of all time. Sam had that velvety voice and Otis sang with so much energy. Different styles but give me Otis every day of the week and twice on Sundays

This thread persuaded me to listen to an album I used to play nonstop growing up. Glad my parents exposed me to the good stuff.

It's a pretty cool story how Otis actually got his break.
While performing as one of Johnny Jenkins back ups (the pine toppers), there was some unused recording time at Stax and Otis asked if he could try one of his own songs. With Jenkins playing guitar, Otis cut "These arms of mine".... The rest is history

Yeah. He was Johnny Jenkins' limo driver as well.

Another good Otis story is apparently his manager Phil Walden was going to have to quit because he couldn't pay his bills. Otis asked him how much he needed and Phil told him. Phil said Otis came back a few days later with a sack full of coins and dollar bills. Walden said he walked door to door to people who owed him money or favors and got them to contribute what they could so Phil could keep working.

I'll try to scratch my head and think of some more tough artists to pick between. Maybe post a thread every few days with similar artists who were great.

Next one may be Beatles vs Phish... Lmao
