The RR HOF is what it is: a Boomer's view of rock n roll that pretty much completely ignores the collapse of monoculture in 1977. So, if you just view it as a museum to the 60s and 70s, then that's a decent crop of inductees, and pretty varied (blue eyed soul, pop songstress, crappy arena rock, prog legend, singer/songwriter). OK, Nirvana isn't from that era, but they are too huge to ignore.

I think a more interesting class, hell, a more interesting museum, would be to do a better job of honoring all of the various fractured parts of rock music's tree going forth from disco and punk, but that's never going to happen. We're talking about a museum that still hasn't inducted Lou fricking Reed. They clearly aren't interested in the underbelly. Which is fine, it's Rolling Stone's museum, essentially. But what I find odd is that not only do they not honor bands like the Mats, Sonic Youth, or the Cure, but they completely ignore super popular bands from the 80s like Bon Jovi and Duran Duran. Or, hell, Whitney Houston.

It's like they keep one group of artists for not being popular enough (though I don't know how you tell the history of rock without Sonic Youth and Black Flag), but then keep another group out for not being critically acclaimed enough (despite Def Leppard selling more records than just about anyone).

The very first HOF class included Ray Charles, so being "rock" has never been a requirement, so I find the hip hop argument silly. Of course they should be in. Smokey Robinson and Aretha Franklin are in, and they aren't "rock" either. So once you've opened the door to hip hop, how the hell do you keep out Eric B and Rakim, or even a foundational artist like Africa Bambaataa?

Like I said, it's a decent class for what the Hall is. The problem is what the Hall is.

Never even nominated. Which is absurd. Johnny Cash is in.

Johnny Cash sang rock & roll (rockabilly) early in his career.

Willie has never been rock & roll.

Willie is more rock and roll than just about anyone on the planet. He does not give a crap, and has always forged his own path. I think all of the founders of outlaw country pretty much laid out the blueprint for what would become modern American indie.

Without Willie Nelson, there is no REM.
