I find these artists to be similar in a lot of ways- kind of working class 80s rock with a lot of memorable guitar riffs, great bass and keyboard, and deep/somewhat gravelly vocals singing about rock n roll, babes, and taking care of business. They all share a somehow "masculine" quality that contrasts with a lot of the glam rock and pop stuff from that time. How would you rank them in terms of how much you like them?

It's really hard for me to pick the first two but here's mine:

Huey Lewis

Robert Palmer

Bruce Springsteen

Please share your thoughts and/or rip me for not paying the boss respect.

The over-the-top Springsteen hate is so played out.

It's not hate, the other two are just measurably superior musicians in every aspect.

Early Robert Palmer blows both of these out of the water.

Sneaking Sally
Pressure Drop
Some People Can Do What They Like

are all better than anything the other two have done.

I think I'd like Springsteen the least as a person. I may enjoy RP and Huey's music more. But Bruce is:

1) The best musician
2) The best lyricist
3) The best showman

lol. literally wish they decided to become accountants or engineers.

while springsteen has a lot of over produced crap, and the E Street can go suck a frick, his Nebraska album is fantastic and tops anything the above dbags ever made.

but this is just like, you know, my opinion man.

while springsteen dables in cheesy fricking music, palmer and huey lewis are the definition of cheesy fricking music.

Robert Palmer and Huey Lewis became the epitome of 80's cheese. Simply Irresistible and Hip to be square would negate all the early stuff those two did. While I see Sneaking Sally listed and as great as it is, would it be as popular now if Phish didn't cover it?

Robert Palmer needed greats like Allen Toussaint, Little Feat, and The Meters to make a great album. Bad case of Loving you, no comment.

Sam Kinison says it best:
It's hip to be square? That must be the same place it's hip to be named Huey.

I can't even see those two compared to the Boss. It's one thing to say Bruce is overrated but in the same breath, there's a reason people tend to say it. You won't hear people talking about Palmer or Huey being overrated.

I don't think very many people have really listened to ALL of RPs stuff. The amount of ground he covered without giving a f*ck basically is pretty impressive.
