His music with Husker Du was a very important part of my youth and helped shaped my musical tastes... cancer is a mean motherfricker!

This one hurts. Grant Hart was a legend, and a big piece of my childhood. But the band broke up acrimoniously right before alt-rock took over the mainstream, so he missed out on the rewards of the foundation he laid. He had everyone's gushing awe, but he had no band, his house literally burned down, a crippling drug addiction for years, and he was misdisagnosed with AIDS before getting cancer. Grant Hart had a terrible time being alive.

Yet he made some of my very favorite records. I wish he had a happier life. Here's to Zen Arcade.
