so my wife and I are going to Boulder 7/2 and 3 for "what's left of the dead" shows there, but red rocks is most definitely on my bucket list. I see there are shows at red rocks those same two nites (umphreys mcgee)...and a show on 7/4 with blues traveler

so two questions:

1) worth the drive over? Is it a destination no matter the show?
2) can't say I'm a huge fan of blues traveler but how bad can it be?

I went to see STS9 there in 2012. It is absolutely worth the trip. The scenery and atmosphere is surreal.

I've only been there once, but I think I would see a show if I didn't like the band. Bring a flask just in case. Enjoy the light show.

from boulder? hell yea. Its worth the trip even if there is no concert. There is some really cool hiking, with unique rock formations around there, and of course they are all red. Some dinosaur stuff too.

When you get a chance to see a show at Red Rocks....DO IT!
Incredible venue.
Awesome acoustics.
Oh and both headliners will be top notch.

Too bad you aren't here in September Jason Isbell and Lucero are playing

I would consider selling one night of the tickets to Dead and co if you would rather see umphrees, than blues travler show at Red rocks.

Umphrees > Blues Traveler

And I'm definitely a Dead fan.

Check out their cover of Help on the Way/Slipknot

JRAD is opening up for Umphrey's both nights. No brainer. You could even leave before UM.

just the second nite it looks like
If it was just JRAD playing I would definitely skip the 2nd Folsom show

for those that have been should I plan on hanging around the red rocks area for another day after the 7/4 show? I booked a cabin near Morrison so we can definitely stay another nite if there is cool stuff to see

I was traveling annually to RR for shows until kids came into the picture. I am going Memorial Day weekend for My Morning Jacket, and it's my first trip since 2012.

It has been worth it every time, and you will be grateful if you go. It's the best venue anywhere. The scenery alone is worth the trip, so who cares which band is playing.

We will be going to see The Big Lebowski on the Monday night we are there as well. Apparently they screen movies when concerts aren't happening.

Umphrey's puts on a great show. Would love to see them at Red Rocks.

I enjoy watching Jake Cinninger shred the guitar. Guy can play it like no other.

Umphreys covering Shine on You Crazy Diamond at Red Rocks last year was the best musical moment of my life.

Given the setting (RR) and light show, even someone who isn't a fan could enjoy that show with ease.

Have you checked out TWIDDLE? Very similar shredding, and they play Rocks.

Caught Umphreys at Red Rocks in 2012. Railroad Earth opened. Great show. Also caught a Panic 3 night run in Summer 08. Red Rocks is incredible. Spirits abound.

Here are some tips for Red Rocks

1) Best place to park is the upper north lot. It's an easy walk from there. Any other lot and you're going to have to do a lot of climbing. If you park in the lower north, you'll have to climb the stairs which is brutal if you're not in good shape. The problem with the upper north is that it fills up early. It's also the hardest one to get out of after the show. The south lots aren't bad and you walk up a long ramp instead of the stairs.

2) Down front is great but really the best place to be is about 1/3 to 1/2 way back from the stage. That way you get reflections off the rocks and the sound is like no other venue you've been to. Even all the way back isn't bad at all. It's not a huge venue and there's not a bad seat in it.

3) If you're using the north lots, come in off of I-70, take the Hwy 93 exit and then use Entrance 1 into the park. If you want to go for the south lots, take C-470 south to the Morrison exit, go through the town of Morrison and then use Entrance 3.

4) Prepare for rain. Bring ponchos and something to sit on to keep your butt dry. Also it will get chilly after the sun goes down. Bring a sweater, hoodie, windbreaker or something similar.

5) You can also bring food and sealed drink bottles. There is an OK selection of beer available and also typical food items like nachos.

6) I wouldn't even worry about what band to see. I've been to more shows at Red Rocks than any other venue and I've never been to a bad show, even if I didn't particularly care for the band playing. RR is a special place. Bands seem to play better there as they feed off the energy of the crowd and the scenery. It doesn't matter who you see; you'll enjoy it.

7) If you can go early, there are a lot of hiking trails around there if you're into that. There's also a visitor center and the Colorado Music Hall of Fame. And there's a gift shop down by the lower south lots if you need some souvenirs.

Have fun. I know you will. It really is the best venue on Earth in my opinion. The Gorge is good but Red Rocks is on another level.
