I have predominantly played electric and while I own a fender 12 string acoustic I don't really like it and am ready to purchase a new acoustic. I'm working on a budget of about $1000. Can you get a decent Martin or Taylor for that price? Who has advice?

Yes, absolutely. Neither of those companies makes a guitar that isn't decent, in fact even their bottom tier stuff is still pretty great. Epiphone Masterbuilts are a great value if you want to come in under $600 price point. A 200 series Taylor is a very nice sounding and playing guitar for the money.

Blue Ridge guitars. I have a BR-160. I love it. I've been at GC and other music stores more than I care to admit. I've not found anything under 1200-1500 that sounds better then my blue ridge.

It does a good job of copying a D28.

I think Taylor's are better at the 1000 range.

Look at used guitars too.

I've seen you recommend this guitar a few times and that it sounds similar to a D28. I love the look of that guitar. I'm looking to upgrade from the beginner Washburn that I bought a few years ago which has served me well. I really like that well rounded warm sound from Martin's. Is there any other brand/model that sounds similar to this in the $400-$600 range? I'm going to go test out a few different Blueridge guitars soon and I wanted to know if there was anything else I should look into? I really like to play fingerstyle guitar if that matters.

For about $800 I'd look into Taylor's new Academy line. The 12e is a Grand Concert shape or if you prefer a Dreadnought, the 10e. Both are the same price.

Blueridge BR 160. They straight up copied the materials and style of a D28

The BR 180. They straight up stole from the D-45.

With the exception of ebony. To my knowledge there are not ebony finger boards on blue ridge BR 160.

Used a BR160 can be found in that budget. Mine was $399 at GC. I think someone made an error.

They also make a BR 140 that is the copy of a D18.

Are they Martins? Hell no. Not trying to say that, but for me, my ear can't pick up a difference enough to justify an extra 2000-2500.

Another brand? Eastman. I've held a used Eastman in my hands. It was almost a parlor guitar in body shape. But that little bastard was loud.

I agree with this. I have played some Blueridge and they sound just like a Martin and are constructed pretty well.

Eastman is making some great guitars.... I never liked the heavy headstock inlays on some of the blueridges but have played some good ones

Taylor 324 can be had at $999 too. I've seen them. Normal $1300 guitar and I like it.

You can see them at GC sometimes for $999 if they've sat for a while I guess.

Get a used Martin if you wanna spend around $1000.

If you wanna spend much less($250-500) get a "lawsuit" model Takamine. These were made in the 70s up until the early 80s, I believe. Great, great guitars. They have Takamine written on them that looks just like the Martin font.

Here's a link to one for sale that I found with a quick google search.......

1974 Takamine F-360 $449

I chose a Breedlove Atlas series about 8 years ago over a Taylor and have been thrilled with it.
The direct input sound sold me on it and I've gotten dozens of compliments on the tone over the years.
Check out Breedlove!

Used PRS SE acoustic.

$500. It was a bit banged up but was like a rescue dog. She'd love you forever. I can't remember the artist whose signature model it was, it had a big scuff but rang out like a mad bastard when strummed.

I have played quite a few Takamines over the years, but most were spruce top, rosewood back and sides. Fine guitars, but didn't stand out to me enough to buy.
A few months ago though, I came across one with a cedar top and mahogany back and sides,1 fairly big scratch on the top, action was perfect though and sounded great. So I bought it.I swear, this guitar has grown on me,and it may be the best guitar I have ever played, and I have played a lot of guitars.
It's a late 90s N-10.

Ever played a Yairi?

For the dollars they're an excellent value. I haven't shopped in a while but a grand isn't going to get you near the same quality Martin as 600-700 dollar DY57 (or similar). Most mid range don't have solid back and sides, but their ply is hand made by them and remarkably well done. The tops are select AA and AAA woods. The bracing varies on their Martin clones, it's as stolen as the old Tak's. I've got two and they always turn heads and get passed around to play. Not the best - just something you might consider in the economy range.

eta: oops: just saw 4rd post above (BEWARE of the S.Yairi's they're not in same league)
