Ray Alder is the best metal frontman of all time

It also helps to have the groove master and beast Mark Zonder on the drums all those years

I like Fates Warning, but Alder is hardly the guy who comes to mind when I think of "best metal frontman".
Some of my favorites include:
-Bruce Dickinson
-Rob Halford
-Ronnie James Dio
-Phil Anselmo
-Matt Barlow
-Geoff Tate

As a big fan a progressive metal, I can honestly say that no prog frontman will top a best of metal frontman list.

Devin Townsend and Mikael Akerfeldt are the clear winners for me.

Two outstanding voices but neither are better frontmen than Phil Anselmo.

Disagree, both of them are actually charismatic on the mic and not self-absorbed assholes.

Back in the 90's no one came close to Anselmo. Back in the 80's David lee Roth ruled the universe. Fact!
Honorable mention to King Diamond -

Both are immensely talented musicians and phenomenal vocalists, but would you really classify Townsend or Akerfeldt as frontment?
Akerfeldt is a very rigid performer, with little stage presence. Even when he was performing just vocals for Bloodbath, I never really thought of him as a world class "frontman".
Townsend is a little better, but he is still hampered by having to play his instrument proficiently during the course of a performance.
Guys like Anselmo, Dio, Dickinson, Halford, etc., are not held back by a instrument while engaging in their theatrical movements and captivating performances.

Theatrical movements? What you find captivating, I find extremely cheesy.

To each his own, but do you really find Bruce Dickinson waving the British flag and running around on stage to be all that cheesy? What about Rob Halford riding a motorcycle onto stage while clad in his trademark leather and studs ensemble?

Not any cheesier than Dio singing about rainbows, mountains, dragons ect.... for about the last 40 years....

False. Halford.

No argument from me. Frankly, metal is an inherently cheesy genre in many ways. I guess that's what I like about guys like Devin and Mikael, who certainly don't take themselves too seriously.

Pretty bold statement, Ian Gillan is the best metal frontman of all-time. Incredibly powerful and versatile voice, could outsing all rock singers in his prime and was the prototype for all subsequent to him.

Can always include Steve Marriott for Humble Pie.

I agree, they are both hilarious and are very good at what they do but they just don't control the crowd like other guys do. They are fantastic musicians but they aren't at the top of the list of frontmen.

While a personal choice, this list has the best answers. Even if I hate Phil and think he's incredibly overrated.
My vote is Bruce.
