Randy Newman does not like LSU

I'm sure a good number of you have heard the song "Rednecks" by Randy Newman. For those of you who haven't, it's a satirical song about the Southern man. In the song, there is a particular lyric where Newman takes a shot at LSU:
College men from LSU, went in dumb, come out dumb too
Now, I know this song is meant to be satire, but it makes you wonder, out of all the Southern schools, why did Newman choose LSU as the one to diss? The only thing I can think of is that, if I remember correctly, Newman lived in New Orleans for a time, or had family there, maybe he's a Tulane fan?

He played at the LSU Union a few years ago. Do you think he would have booked a show there if he hated it?

Good point. I doubt this song was included in his set for that particular show though.
Just makes one wonder why he chose LSU, had to be something there.

We got no-necked oilmen from Texas
And good ol' boys from Tennessee

Hustlin' 'round Atlanta in their alligator shoes
Meh. Probably a rhyming thing. We're the best known school by our initials, period. He also mentions 4 specific Southern "areas" including LSU. He also mentions 5 specific Northern places and liberal San Francisco as hypocritical and in denial about their bigotry.
That song is similar to "The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down" - in that it is a non-Southerner somewhat proudly expressing a Southern sentiment, right or wrong, however unpopular.

It's my opinion that The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down should be required listening for every red-blooded American male (the "dying breed" kind) walking this earth.
That song holds a lot of personal meaning for me. I listened to it on repeat when my grandfather was dying in the hospital, and I was pondering my new place in the family. I was 25 and starting to really understand what it meant to respect life. It WILL put you in the right frame of mind when you need to call upon it.

So grateful to have seen him at Jazz Fest a few years back on a wonderful Sunday, right before the Allman Brothers killed it as well.

He's right, I was a dumbass when I went to LSU and I'm still one.

My brain was definitely relieved of some of its function by the time I graduated.

He must be an Alabama fan, since he didn't mention them and on the same album has a song saying how freaking great Birmingham is.

The sign when you enter Birmingham...
"Birmingham- at least we aren't Montgomery."

If you've seen Major League, he's the guy singing to open the movie.

What song did you listen to? The satire is about the Northern States' view of the Southern States, so it's pro-LSU.

I love 'Rednecks'. I laugh every single time I hear that line about LSU.
