You know what else is 50 today? Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde, possibly his best work.

God Only Knows is so damn good.

So many brilliant harmonies on every track with vocals and the great Paul McCartney proclaimed it the greatest song in history.

Certainly the most influential of its time in terms of the artists singing its praises and Paul's famous quote that Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened without it.

One remarkable cut is "Caroline, No", with its haunting melody and eerie percussion effects. The utter angst and melancholy in this tract is palpable.

IMHO "Smile" would have been better than Pet Sounds, if Smile could have been released back in Spring, 1967.

Smile would be a harmonizing paradise.

Smile was a reach for the sky. Back in the days when the only way to edit was to cut the audio tape with a razor blade, it took a VERY long time to make a complicated recording. The technology didn't exist for what Brian Wilson envisioned for Smile.

Ingenious how Brian spliced down 90 hours of Good Vibrations sessions to the 4 minutes it encompassed.

Oh, absolutely. GV took him forever to finish. He didn't have enough time and energy to finish Smile. Capitol Records wanted it out in time for Christmas 1966. No way it could be finished by then.
Brian Wilson wasn't competing against The Beatles, he was competing against all four Beatles AND George Martin. Martin had many more years of experience at record production than Brian back then.

Not to mention he had to contend with vehement resistance from the rest of the band members, prominently Mike.

The historical record is not absolutely clear on the "band interference" issue. Mike says he was not unreasonably difficult. He says that at the time he expressed some misgivings about the radically different nature of Smile. If Brian were mentally healthy at the time, Mike's opinion would not have been such a negative vibe.
Well, if Mike was not an obstructionist, then, he certainly was no help at all. Brian wasn't mentally healthy enough to deal with the time pressure. He was born with Schizo Affective Disorder and mental problems seem to run in his family.
Sergeant Pepper album released in Summer 1967. Brian wanted Smile released before then, but with no help and struggling with mental illness, there was no way.
Capitol Records wanted the band to crank out another surf album with some AM radio hits. Mike wanted that too. Nobody but Brian was thinking of something more deep than that in the USA back in 1966.

The Velvet Underground say hi!
Seriously, it was an all time great record... genius.. I went through an obsession with it back in the early 90s, when it was released on CD..

It was a factor to an extent plus as you attested with Brian's mental health issues combined with the drugs he took. Apparently, Brian kept changing his mind on the inclusions of tracks regarding potential configurations of the album that never stood as they weren't compatible with his ever-changing visions. The business climate of the situation obviously wasn't conducive to accommodate such actions.

Link me to a VU song that has modular and layered production, something complex, more complex than the familiar VU songs that I've heard. They are great, but, production-wise, not complex. Unless I've missed something.
Smile covers these themes: the development of the USA in the course of history, the human life cycle, and The Elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Did the Velvet Underground cut an album with that kind of ambitious vision?

I was referring to the "AM radio hits" comments, not production style...
edit: In regards to production, I'd say Phil Spector was up there, at that time...
