Top 10 all-time song?

Top 20?

Buddy Holly (godfather to the Brits invasion)

Rolling Stones
Beatles
Grateful Dead
Bob Dylan
Springsteen
U2

Covered, copied, idolized, played.

Bo Didley
Stevie Nicks
Rush
Foreigner
The Byrds
Everly Brothers

All covers.

I mean the Beatles demo'd Not Fade Away to get a record deal.

It was the gateway for the Rolling Stones. Put them on American TV and was their first hit.

?

It's not on the Decca audition tape, which is what got them their deal with EMI

It wasn't a big US hit for the Stones

not their best cover but always loved the placement in shows in the 80s and 90s. nothing like hearing the whole stadium clapping in unison and singing "you know our love will not fade away" until they came back for encore.

They had their first US TV appearance with it.

Didn't they?

And I have heard Paul and John would try to write songs like Buddy Holly after school.

Paul McCartney even said their first initial big hit, Love Me Do was a total rip off of the the chords from Buddy Holly.

It was their first UK top 5 hit. But I would say it was the overall reaction to the Stones that enabled them to tour the US and get on US TV, rather than the impact of that one record. It barely cracked the top 50 in the US

Is this a thread about Buddy Holly in general or "Not Fade Away" specifically?

And sometimes when the crowd could manage to keep the beat together they'd pick it back up again to start the encore. That was pretty cool. But it was best when it was coupled with Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad (which was played in the movie The Grapes of Wrath which happened to be on TCM last night).

Maybe.

But the two go hand in hand as most influential.

Stones version was better than Holly's.

Everyone else should be pumping gas.
