Not a topic usually discussed as often as I'd love. From the first and second wave. Any other Music board posters enjoy the extreme metal that Scandinavia has provided?

If so, what bands, albums and songs have had an influence on youre life/musical preferences or whatever it may be?

I've been listening to the album, "Storm of the lights Bane" by Dissection, "deathcrush" and "Dawn of the black hearts" by Mayhem, "Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam" by gorgoroth and "Asks" by Burzum the most lately.

I know this subject and music isnt everyone's TD preference, but neither are many forms of art. And if it isnt, that also isnt unexpected.

I was listening to Satyricon recently after they announced they would be playing Nemesis Divina at a few shows next year. I know some purists hate how they changed their sound with Volcano but I really like all their albums since then. My main problem with this genre is the overall shitty sound quality and they kind of fixed that. Overall not its not something I listen to much, but I can listen to a few bands here and there.

The low sound quality. At times very lo-fi was their way of creating a cold, icy, lifeless sound. Also a rebellion. A lot of bands have parted ways with the burzum/darkthrone quality, and I do enjoy a lot of bands that upped their production.

Varg's first burzum album. He used the microphone of a telemarketer headphone/microphone combo. I enjoy to more produced, not"overly done" of recent. With The Gaahl/King ov Hell era of gorgoroth, I don't think storm of the lights bane with dissection is overly produced..imo jon was just a talented man and killer lyricist, plus the Swedish love melody. Shining, Watain, Emperor, 1349, improved production in a few steps from a lot of the early second wave.

Not too big into bands like Witchery who just seem to be trying too hard.

Loved satyricon back when they were releasing songs like Mother North. You looking forward to Nov 5?

Much more into doom, but I do like some Black. I really like the stuff that incorporates folk elements into it more than straightforward Black/satanic.

I understand the reasoning behind the poor production quality but it still sounds like shite to me and I can't get over that.

I've seen both Mayhem and Watain live, I think I liked Mayhem better. Attila is certainly unique to watch. Unfortunately Watain doesn't tour with a rotting horse carcass anymore so I'll never get the full experience. I wish more of these bands would do US tours. There's a few I'd see just for a change of pace if nothing else.

I'm not really a fan of the ethos espoused by black metal, but I do enjoy Swedish death metal.

At the Gates, Entombed, Bloodbath, early Katatonia (more of a death-doom style), etc., are all great to listen to.

I don't really care for the Gothenburg/melodic death metal sound made popular by bands like In Flames.

I hear you. But, unfortunately a lot of the members of these bands have trouble traveling to other countries because of their criminal history.

Hell, the only member of Gorgoroth in the mid to late 2000s that could travel inside of the US was King ov Hell.

I just wish I could have went abroad in time to see dissection. Love that earlier work.

The production work can sometimes be down right shitty, by I enjoy it to a sense, into that you can tell the difference between talent and poser in that genre.

My appreciation for black metal is almost purely theoretical. I'm kind of fascinated by the progression from Satanist-boogieman rebellion to the weird atavism thing. It all seems on the surface like they dug up that whole motivation strictly to achieve the gravitas they thought would make it all more weighty and formidable. To one-up bands like Slayer who are not sincere about their inverted values.

I hate to say it but regardless of legit musical orchestration, I find most of it to be completely unlistenable just in an audio sense. And I do realize that's kind of the point. But I like challenging music and mostly dislike this stuff. I guess them's just the breaks.

It's an extremely acquired taste to say the least. Play some Emperor for your co-workers and watch what happens.
