New wave is really a relative term. A lot of new wave acts had post punk influences, while a lot had synth pop roots. I prefer bands like New Order and The Cure. I consider Ceremony by New Order to be one of the original new wave songs, and one of the best songs of all time in my opinion. Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie is also a great new wave song.

I agree with you and I prefer new wave bands like the cure, the smiths, new order, etc. I don't like the super pop Casio sounding 80s stuff.

Can't say what "New Wave" is to everybody. Being an eighties boy, I'd say Blondie, The Knack and The Cars.

What's funny is, if you look at the signature hits that all three of those bands are known for, they were all from before 1980.
