The song would be much better instrumental. The vocals just aren't good.

I disagree with you. I have always been a huge fan of Spencer's style though while a ton of people aren't, so I understand what you are saying.

I mean, I'm a Meshuggah fan, so the style of the growls doesn't bother me. His execution just isn't great.
Speaking of Meshuggah, one of the commenters on the video was spot on with the Dancers to a Discordant System comparison for the middle portion of the song.

They are two different bands. I dont see why they have to be compared to one another. They aren't doing the same stuff at all except that they fit in the prog and djent category. One example is that Periphery uses plenty of cleans and their music is more contracts in terms of note usage.

The first time I heard Periphery was when I saw them open for Deftones. I thought they were a second rate Meshuggah with lame emo vocals.
