I have a niece who's really into piano (she plays) and I'd like to introduce her to some good piano music that isn't classical. The first thing that comes to mind is the opening track on Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie. Maybe some Ben Folds? I don't want to bore her, either. I have no clue what that age group listens to and it's hard to get straight answers.

Is there an album that you'd recommend that is mostly piano driven?

I just wish someone would have introduced me to more interesting music at that age. I feel like I didn't find myself musically until college but wish I could have started sooner.

Many of Coldplays songs are Piano based and aren't to difficult. They're also newer, so she may actually know who they are

Also, Billy Joel and Elton John

My mom is a solid piano player herself. Outside of playing a lot of hymns, Queen and Celine Dion seem to be her favorites.

Not sure if an album that contains the lyric, "Can I get a minute of not being nervous and not thinking of my dick?" is apporpriate for a 13 year old girl, but Boxer by the National has a bunch of great songs where the piano is featured. Especially Fake Empire and Ada, and I don't think either contains any questionable lyrics.

I would play All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem to her.

I doubt she will relate to James Murphy's lyrics of accepting growing older, but the music (and especially that piano loop) are perfect. And I imagine it's different than most things she has heard.

Ben folds is a pretty good balance of pop with little flares of jazz and classical. I learned every song front to back of whatever amen and unauthorized. Elton John is more rock but is also fun to learn. I dunno, when I started really enjoying piano Folds was my go to for little tips and tricks when he played live. Good luck, piano is the best.

For some female artists....

Diana Krall
Tori Amos
Sara Bareillis(sp?)
Demi Lovato
Norah Jones
Alicia Keyes

And there's a really young one I'm drawing a blank on. If it comes to me I'll update.

Big fan of introducing girls to female artists. Guess it's the SJW in me.

Is she a Louisiana girl? My son is a piano player who grew up hearing me play Dr. John, Professor Longhair, Harry Connick, Jr., Joe Krown, Jon Cleary. The first sheet music he ever asked me to get for him was "Mess Around" by Ray Charles. Introduce her to some of this stuff. Not all easy to play but it'll get her on the right, LOCAL track! Maybe ignite some interest for further study.

I don't know her level at piano, but there were a couple of good books/CD's put out some years back by Dr. John on playing New Orleans piano.

Julien Baker is who I was thinking of, but after listening to her album she's more of a guitarist/singer. Though she does piano on a few songs.
