The last thing I need is another guitar but there is a pretty sweet cherry red 1998 Epi ES-335 Dot on Craigslist for $325. I understand that the Pro model is better than the Dot but this still seems like a decent deal. Talk me out of it if it's not.

I wouldn't. At that price point, you'd be better off with an MVG (Miami Vintage Guitars). They use better wood, hardware, and finishes. Their electronics and pickups are a tossup, though.

Another brand worth checking out is Agile.

I'm not talking anyone out of buying a guitar today. I just pulled the trigger on a Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster in Burgundy Mist Metallic.

Wow, what a beauty!

You want to see someone absolutely smoke on one of those, check out JD Simo and his cherry 335

Is that Epi stock or does it have any upgrades on it?

I didn't see any hollow-bodies at MVG but this Agile at $400 seems pretty good for that Bill Nelson look.

Thanks for the rec.

If you go Epiphone try and get one of the Japanese ones from the 70's/80's/90's. avoid their newer garbage.

No, no, no. If you must have a newer make semi hollow body, go with maybe Eastman or Loar. Otherwise get something from Japan (vintage Greco, Tokai, Epiphone, etc), or just get a fricking Gibson.

I recall seeing a Paul McCartney show and noticed an Epiphone sitting on his stage. If it's good enough for him, it sure as hell is going to be good enough for me. I have a Les Paul copy in my collection of what is otherwise Fenders.

I'm sure Paul didn't have a $350 Epiphone on stage

This particular one is a '98, made in Korea according to the owner.

I think it's stock. I haven't contacted the owner yet (and I'm not sure I will) but if I do, I'll verify that.

To be honest, I'm more of a Fender guy than a Gibson/Epi, but the Dot is one of the better offerings - if you're going to buy an Epi. If you have a slot for a ES-335 in the lineup, you could do worse.

I mean, I would probably go more with an Ibanez Artcore AS73 for about $400 new before I got the Epi Dot, especially used. But, yours isn't a terrible deal.

I'm more of a Fender guy too. I have two Strats and a Tele but I've always wanted a semi-hollow. I do have a Jay Turser semi-hollow but the pickups are crap. So one option would be to drop a couple of Seth Lovers in that guitar instead of buying a new one.

It's probably this Epi or nothing. It's not like I woke up this morning and said, "Today's the day I buy a new hollow body." I am a craigslist whore and I happened across this ad and was interested. But since I don't know a lot about Epis I thought I'd ask here to see if it's something I should consider.

Appreciate the response.

Japan...70s/80s

My Charvel Model 5 is an '87 Japanese import, and it BLOWS the DOORS off of (some) USA Jacksons and was half the cost.

Them bastids built the shite out of some git-fiddles back in the day...don't know about now, but...

Have an Epiphone Joe Pass. If you can acquire the serial number, you can run the data base and find point of origin. The Korean models are the preferred in the more recent years.

Fwiw, I paid $300 for the Joe Pass and its a fine instrument. Plays well, structurally sound and decent craftsmanship.
