James Taylor "Something in the Way She Moves"
The Beatles "Something"
Nirvana "Something in the Way"
All three songs have a similar line "something in the way" (which I understand is a relatively common expression), but each has a drastically different tone and message.
Can you think of any examples?
quote:
Something in the way she moves, or looks my way, or calls my name
that seems to leave this troubled world behind.
And if I'm feeling down and blue or troubled by some foolish game,
she always seems to make me change my mind..
The Beatles "Something"
quote:
Something in the way she moves
Attracts me like no other lover
Something in the way she woos me
Nirvana "Something in the Way"
quote:
Underneath the bridge
My tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals I've trapped
Have all become my pets
And I'm living off of grass
And the drippings from my ceiling
It's okay to eat fish
Cause they don't have any feelings
Something in the way, mmm
Something in the way, yeah, mmm (x3)

happens all the time in rap/hip hop but is passed off as "paying homage"

Without actually knowing what the songs are:
"get in my truck, slide on over"
something about a bottle of wine and a blanket out by the water/dirt road/etc.

I don't get the point of this thread..."Something in the way" isn't some unique or uncommon phrase as you said, so it is not surprising that it shows up in lots of songs. I'm sure "I love you" and "I will remember" are also phrases that appear in lots of songs. What is there to discuss?

I think the Nirvana lyric is great. Cobain was a huge Beatles fan and I think he enjoyed the misdirection of taking a lyric that expresses love, as in the Beatles song, and turning it into a lyric that expresses rejection and indicates how the protagonist feels like he is "in the way" and is something to be discarded like garbage.

James Taylor did an internship with the Beatles in England... George Harrison pilfered Taylor's lyrics and theme.

quote:The Beatles - "You Can't Do That"
I can't help my feelings. I go out of my mind.
Weezer - "Hash Pipe"
