You can define modern and rock for yourself. Inimitable is the key. I think Chris Cornell.

I LOVE Pearl Jam and it hurts to say Vedder is a better answer.

In his prime Cornell can't be repeated. Like him or not, he was the only person in the world that can sound like that.

And I was on this earth for 3-4 years while Elvis was alive. So I will stretch the term modern and go with him. He is easily the most impersonated.
