Has anyone watched this? I've only watched a couple of episodes, and I have found it to be great.

I'm of an age where I never "got" metal, partly because like much new music, it was a younger persons' music, and I never listened to it.

Watching the interviews, the tremendous influence of jazz, blues and even classical music on the metal masters is fascinating. Many of these guys are great musicians (as opposed to power chord bangers that I assumed they were) and are also very intelligent.

Very eye opening and enlightening.

Yeah its great. Watch Metal: A Headbanger's Journey too. Its from the same guy and basically tries to define metal.

They were all good, I did not like that they turned the Thrash episode into a Metallica love fest.

I think a lot of classical crosses over to metal fairly well.

I agree. Now. I never thought about it before.

I also did not know about the animosity between metal and punk when it arrived. The metal guys were offended and perceived the punk guys as hacks.

Metal Evolution - Extreme Metal; The Lost Episode (Full Episode)

I hate the fact that they crammed so many of the extreme subgenres into one episode. Hell, death metal and black metal alone deserve their own episodes.

That's what I have been trying to tell people for years.

When I was in my early 20's I had an afternoon with my grandfather, who was about 75 at the time. He loved music and of course it was mostly older stuff.

I pulled out Triumph, who I was very fond of at the time and I played Petite Etude/Say Goodbye and Magic Power for him.

I won't say he went out and bought Triumph records after that, but it opened his eyes in the same way this show did for me.

This episode only came out a year or two ago due to popular demand. Plus it was mostly cowdfunded through kickstarter so he probably didn't have the money to do it like he wanted.

Yeah, I knew the story behind it. Still, I wish they could have done more.

Sam Dunn has done some excellent work overall. Honestly, he pretty much has my dream job.

I liked that they considered Soundgarden a metal band. I've been trying to tell people that for years. They were a metal band linked with "grunge" because they happened to be from Seattle.

Dunn's Docs are really good. Non metalheads seem to mostly miss why we like the music. I love the complexity and intelligent lyrics of much of music.

Brings me to a question about screamo. Is it considered metal? I like the sound of some of it, and I hear vocals, but not lyrics.

It really opened my eyes to it.

However, when I see those huge concert crowds, I wonder how many like it because of the complexities and ties to jazz, blues and classical.

Excellent documentary. I was fascinated by the origin of Black Sabbath. I never really listened to their original song. Damn that was an evil song.

Black Sabbath - "Black Sabbath"

Those three notes...

No

It's an offshoot of Hardcore. Which would make it a punk subgenre.

They seem to play good bit of it on the "Metal" station on Sirius/XM. Probably Ozzy's Boneyard would be a better place to start?

Real metal fans will make fun of you for listening to screamo. That's for teenage girls. Start with the basics, Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, etc.
